Bissinger

I don't think he understands what is going on. It seems like he can't differentiate between a blogger and the letter writers.

To be fair to Bissinger there are some pretty horrible letter writers out there. I've worn that hat many times.

Back in the day (I'm assuming) people would read an article in a newspaper. Then, if someone really had something to say they would compose a letter to the editor. I'm sure folks put in a lot of thought and time into those letters. The finest letters were selected for print in the following days. This system gave the editor considerable power.

Now, people read an article or blog and can whip up a letter in no time. I'm assuming most people are at work and don't have a lot of time to be as thoughtful as they could be in a different setting. Therefore we often scribble up the lowest common denominater. We often say outrageous things just to see how others react - I'm sure it's some blend of boredom and narcissism and curiosity. It's a new landscape.

I think it's great. I grew up reading Paul Daugherty in the Cincinnati paper (yes, singular). I hated his writing. Always putting down the Buckeyes and whatnot. I would write letters and emails to the paper. I obviously never heard anything in response. But now I visit his blog - and - lookee - he writes back. That's kind of cool. And you know what? I really really respect him now. Not because he writes back, but because he's accessible - he's a person, a dad, a Reds fan, and not the high and mighty writer I imagined him to be.

Same thing here. King has responded to my letters. It's pretty cool. This format has taken some influence away from the writer and let's everyone have a say. It's obvious why Bissinger isn't happy about that. I wouldn't like it either. But, he should just shut up. He can't hold back the tide.

By the way that Costas Now show was great.

and....

We're down to the final 8 in this prestigious provincial curling tournament.

College baseball is a blast to watch. Tonight should be fun.

Orel is about 10x better then Barry as an announcer. The Bulldog had some amazing insight last night. Especially when he talked about pitchers shaking off their catchers.

I've always found that exchange the most fascinating bit of game theory in baseball.

King

Is that where WES has been? You banish him for weeks at a time? If so - that's awesome.

(WES, great question about 'him' and the Georgia game tonight. That's novel thinking.)

Dear Mathias Risse:

My name is Mikes Pace. I'm visiting Boston soon and looking for somewhere to stay. I just called the Radisson in Boston (I really did) and they are offering me a room at a rate of $289.00 a night. I hear that you have a nice extra bedroom in the lovely Cambridge area. Can I swing by for the night?

Thanks,

Mikes Pace

Detwiler

This morning in physical therapy (I messed up my left thumb playing baseball) I couldn't help but think of Kyle Detwiler. I haven't played in almost 6 weeks and I couldn't have imagined picking up a bat during that time. Let alone swinging it... let alone taking live pitches.

He was amazing. I'm happy for him and his team. Great story.

I have a theory. When a player messes up any part of his hand or wrist - it can actually help their hitting. You don't want to hit anything off the end of the bat or the handle because it would really hurt. The only way to avoid a lot of pain is to hit it right off the sweet spot. I understand that's what you're always trying to do - but in this situation your hands send a lot of reminders up to the brain to make sure the arms do exactly what they're supposed to. (I think one of the announcers said something similar - I understand my theory isn't groundbreaking, but it's kind of cool)

What's even more exciting: right now, in Columbus, Buckeye football players are throwing steel around.

Hand drying

Have you seen the Xcelerator? It's the one which has the jet engine on it. You put your hands under - and Katrina shows up. I'm cool with it. But I imagine a 95 year old woman with her hands under there, skin flapping to the floor.

Something I've picked up: when you wave your hand the first time, grab that stinking piece of paper and start pulling. Pull until it's offering as much paper as you need. This saves you the indignity of waving your hands around multiple times.

RIP LaVena

This is a tragic story.

I found him

There's stuff that, if you could just go sit in the bullpen every night with a guy who's been in 1,000 games, he knows all kinds of things that you don't even know you don't know. Like what exactly a guy is thinking when he's on the mound. And it's hard to get it because it's two rare skills, asking someone who knows a lot about that stuff to be able to explain it clearly.

It is rare. That's why Joe Leonard Morgan is so great. He's a national treasure. Joe is a two time NL MVP, a two time World Champion, a first ballot Hall of Famer and an Emmy Award Winner.

Good interview. Fun read.

Can't wait.

To be at yankee stadium watching Volquez face Hamilton in the first inning.

You're so right King. Punching those little holes was great. At the very least it taught you who was playing where for whom.

Original article: The meaning of Starbucks

Sissies and America

I truely don't mean to offend anyone. But, it's time to roll our sleeves up as a nation. I like coffee. I make it at home and it's damn good. I've always failed to see how a rational human being would choose to purchase Starbucks coffee. This article tells me that some people are rediscovering rationality. It's high time.
