misty fog turns into clear shot of King in front of his computer. Voiceover:
:: Nothing was on last night. I watched Ken Burns's 'The War' and it was amazing. Really amazing. Didn't watch any sports, don't have jack to talk about. Shoot, it's not Friday, I'm not excited about the NFL this week, the BCS thing is a mess - but what can I argue about it? Nothing. Nothing I can stand by in a few weeks. Did I finish off the turkey breast? Preview a playoff game? Nah, I'm excited to watch it, but not excited enough to preview it. Basketball? Of course not. Hockey? ibid.
hmm. This is tough. I wish my column were called 'Sports When I Feel Like It'
Hmm, people were up in arms about wahoo yesterday. My readers always get worked up about race. Half the class will back me, the other, well, the letters are going to pile up... ::fingers patter keyboard:: ..."
I can't really blame you, King, but why not take it a step farther?
If this is something you are passionate about, you should do something. Talk to that KC writer, talk to all sportswriters you know. Have them all write about this issue on the same day - nationwide. That would get Congress talking, no joke. Think about it, all sportswriters writing about this issue, it's head of the Drudge Report by 7am. Obama and Hillary and Nancy and John et al will be flapping their gums by lunch. And, you know what? The Indians would change their name voluntarily - or congress would score a slam-dunk. (uhh, threaten the anti-trust monopoly status or whatever, it isn't that far-fetched)
Howaboutit?
(the sportswriters would do it, because a newspaper can't fire them for something so politically correct)
Our country is ripe for stuff like this. Think about it. Imus says something 'racist' and the PC police doom him to hell. Hardaway says something about homosexuals, he is immediately doomed to hell by the PC police. Those Jena kids nearly beat the life out of a white kid, the prosecuter is sent to hell. We're a kneejerk PC society, might as well make it work for you in this case.
they aren't crazy, they're just liberal
I'm a little tired of white people determining what is and what is not offensive to other races. Logically, they should only really know what offends them. And, I've read in this thread that a lot of native-americans like and even root for the Indians, AND, they enjoy the connection.
So, how about this:
All Native Americans over 16 years old should vote in an election. If over 50% think the Indians should change their name, the Indians should change their name. If more than 50% think the Indians should stay the Indians, a bunch of white people would probably blame republicans for rigging the voting.
(I think it makes sense to let them decide, no? I mean, we've imposed our will enough, no?)
King:
Why are the Indians any worse than the Vikings? (if it's because of our historical connection, I suggest a mass exodus back to Europe would be a better gesture than restitching baseball hats - that is - if you really cared about it, as opposed to just delivering liberal lip-service)
alright, I'm chartering an ancient sea-faring ship to start removing non-native Americans from America. The voyage will be long and difficult, but well worth it.
First stop: Europe.
Other teams names through which I'm chanelling offense: Red Sox (I prefer blue), Devil Rays (i'm a fundie), Blue Jackets (slander toward U.S. sailors). etc...
if the other team doesn't like it, they can put a fastball in your back. it's pretty simple.
I've decided that the camera you refer to is one of the older HD cams, not as seamless. And Dice-K; don't his eyes remind you of a mute teddybear, overflowing with emotion, but he just can't speak - ready to cry or shout at any moment?
And Manny. I've long admired him as a hitter and baserunner. There is nothing sweeter than cranking one into the gap, loafing it out of the box, and beating the throw to second by a millisecond - without sliding. It will drive coaches insane, but it is pretty pimp. And, he typifies the cardinal rule of baseball: if you hit, you're above the law. Everything else be damned, you can rake.
Whoever said that he doesn't know what the count it when he's hitting - is an idiot. He may forget what the count was during a certain AB during a post-game interview, but, he knows when he's hitting. It's a little too hopefully niave to believe that he is so out of it, so manny, that he doesn't know the count when he's in the box.
And to all these people who get on hitters for celebrating their bombs, I heartily disagree with you. When you lay into a baseball and get absolutely all of it, and you know it's landing well beyond the wall, your first thought isn't: "well, we have lost 3 in a row, and we're down by a few runs, so it surely wouldn't be judicious or honorable for me to throw my hands up."
you just throw your hands up. Some stand around for a while. Others look to their bench. Others undo the batting gloves. It's your moment, to hell with everyone else. If everyone could hit bombs, we wouldn't have this perceived problem.
is yesterday's letters thread inaccessible?
Was there a lot of Buckeye talk?
Find something that conservative christian americans are doing - then ridicule and laugh.
How is this productive?
Some women want to be better housewives. I don't see why that's worthy of ridicule. If all of the same things were taught without knowing the Christian agenda - you all would be fine with it.
Have a nice weekend.
I'm going to pray on Sunday - who wants to make fun of me?
