Tim McCarver is my intellectual hero.

Frank TV. Give it a chance. That dude brings the house down whenever he's on stage. (granted, so did jim carrey, and he made 'how the grinch stole christmas')

The article that keeps on giving

Well done King.

I understand your question was rhetorical, but, I signed up for the letters section, so, I'm going for it.

(excuse me if others have already pointed this out, as I'm assuming folks have)

You offer that starting pitchers throwing back to back games impales the integrity of the game. Or at least it should be considered an affront, because we've all been up in arms about steroids (for the past two decades).

I contend that a pitcher starting in back to back games is a way to respect the integrity of the game, not the other way around. It is a nod to the days when baseball was young and guys threw until their arms fell off. Consider Charley “Old Hoss” Radbourn. The man would routinely start every game for a week. I bet none of his teammates were shooting steroids into their asses. (i could go on, but you get the idea).

A comment on taste. One wry comment has you chuckling for 3 days, while a dead-on madden is looked down upon? Who are you? Fraiser Crane? Mark Russell?

Steinbrenner

Why this loss really hurts:

Steinbrenner is from Cleveland. In fact, he tried to buy the Cleveland Indians long before he bought the New York Yankees. There was a vote in the Cleveland City Council. They rejected Steinbrenner's bid to buy the Indians on the grounds that a man who owned horse tracks shouldn't be able to own their big league team. He was determined to be too unethical. (at least that's the story my northern ohio-bred dad told me)

So, he bought the Yanks. Saw a nice little return on investment. Won some titles. But, in his old age, sad eyes, weak heart and clogged arteries, all he wanted was to beat that team and city which turned him down. He couldn't.

I guess it's all Joe Torre's fault. He'll be gone by Wednesday.

One more thing. Torre has had the longest tenure because Steinbrenner's fire is largely gone.

Q - What is the center of the sports universe?

A - Ohio

on gwynn

Even the best hitters can't explain it. It is physics and physiology. Some people just have it.

It's kind of like talking about making love. It's best to just do it. Do you expect a pornstar to be able to talk about it remarkably better than your average Joe?

my answer - probably not, he's just a lot better at it.

and

has it ever occured to anyone just to laugh at these foolish announcers and watch the game with friends with the volume turned way down? In fact, I prefer a boneheaded announcer. He is usually far more entertaining than his inverse.

ex1: Did you hear what that moron said? Are you serious? He gets paid for this?? (etc.)

no?

just me. wow.

go (mid)west

This is the biggest no-brainer since yesterday.

We can't afford to live where we do, and we don't really like the 'look at me' culture.

We really like the midwest.

Um.

Move.

sorry, this is too easy

first we complain about the sound. now we complain about the picture. what's next?

Individuals: Human up. You don't get the game in HD. Boo fricken hoo. A 10 year younger version of yourself you laugh in your face and ask if your panties are in a bunch while poking you in the chest a little harder than the current you is comfortable with.

Are you tethered to your cellphone for 'safety' reasons?

I apologize for any perceived animosity. I just don't want to see sports daily turn into Ebert & Kaufman.

wes:

your last comment was so utterly stupid and wrong that I had to point it out.

"if a hitter needs a hitting coach, that's a good sign that he shouldn't have been called up...

Wow. You know less that I imagined you do.

Even the best, THE BEST, are helped by a hitting coach. Even if it's only:

coach: "you're lunging a little bit"

hitter: "really?"

coach:"yeah, you're hands are coming forward early, just stay back."

hitter: "gee, i didn't feel that, lemme see next time."

That can make all the difference in the world.

Original article: Is Bill O'Reilly sorry now?

BD

I made that group of 88 comment, and I'll tell you why it's relevant.

Bill O'Reilly's job is to get people worked up and to keep people tuned in - for the sake of advertising dollars. His industry is about shock. He is shocking. It is not hard to imagine that he routinely crosses ethical boundaries for the sake of profit and popularity.

The Group of 88 is a different story. They are liberal professors at one of our country's finest universities. Their job is to teach young Americans about their chosen field. It is expected of them to be by the book. To carefully consider all sides of a topic and adhere the rules of logic and reason.

Bill O'Reilly did not apologize for blaming a kidnapping victim. The Group of 88 did not apologize for their petition which vilified innocent men and declared to "turn up the heat" on the innocent. This was an irresponsible act from a supposedly responsible group. (88 is a LOT of professors).

So, my comparison is relevant. Liberals cannot demand that a conservative talk show host apologize, if they won't demand that a group of professors apologize for the same offense.

disclosure: I disrespect Bill O'Reilly and most of his beliefs and assertions. He is not a good or kind man. I just write this on behalf of intellectual equality.
