The MLK reference struck me. I was in Atlanta for the Final Four, and on that rainy Palm Sunday between the semis and final, I took in the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. Wow. Yeah, I’ve enjoyed a Monday off during every January I can remember, and yeah, I watched slide-shows in elementary school about the bus boycott, but you don’t quite ‘get it’ until you take it in for yourself. After going through the museum I walked across the street to the old Ebenezer Baptist Church, King’s childhood church and the one he later preached in. The place was pretty much empty. I sat in a pew for a while and took in a recorded sermon which King gave in that very room years ago. That experience was worth a lot more than a day off work in January.
