Columbia

Students rushed the stage when the founder of the Minute-Men began to speak. Their technique was simply to silence the man, and create a small-scale riot. That's not the open minded college approach I though we enjoyed as Americans.

Mr. Kaufman:

How much for this dude's direct line?

I can think of a trillion better investments.

But, why not? It's better than leaving billions to spoiled brat kids.

Thanks for the heads up

It's been my experience that the progeny of these type of men tend to be some of the least respectable people on the planet. But, considering how much I respect Salon, I'll give this guy, and his talented daughter, a pass. It's comma-monday.

Original article: I'm younger than that now

Great Article

My dad is 53 too, so I had a good reference point for this piece. Aging is such a tough topic. It's like masturbation - think about it.

I'm 24 today, I was 10 and 4 and 18, I will be 42 and 65 and 27 (god willing). One body, one life, on one rock hurdling through space. I'll see what I can do with it. Good luck with yours!

".... blank slate..."

Priceless quote. I could see millions of feminists spitting their chi double lattes all over their flatscreen monitors. I agree with the Doctor about a lot of things.

Original article: Amish like me

Great Article

"There was a time I would've pitied her for her stern upbringing and all the deprivations thereof, but nowadays I tend to pity the children of heedless parents. Great romantic visionaries who leave a trail of messed-up progeny and embittered lovers"

I couldn't agree more.

I used to drive through amish country on my way between my parents house and college. I've had a similar experience to the one you've recounted. One day a gaggle of Amish folks came into the convenience store where I was buying gas. I exchanged glances with the most stunning girl (in the bonnet of course) and I thought, "boy, you just don't know what you're missing." Then I pulled into my college town and met up with my peers. I looked around and saw chain-smoking, drug addicted, depressed, neurotic girls who had been taken advantage of countless times.

I was right, that Amish girl didn't know what she was missing, and she's better off because of it.

Less is more, people.

Anyone know where to get a good slice of rhubarb pie in New York?

Yo James

The Yanks were "embarrassingly white"?

I understand why whites aren't allowed to be proud but, must we be embarrassed? Is Dikembe Mutombo 'embarrassingly black'? Are the Bronx 'embarrassingly latino'? Is the math department 'embarrassignly asian'? See??

How many standards are there?

Debra is right

Great article. If you are one of the many who blast Debra for this article, you are part of the problem.

Quit being offended

Life isn't easy. Feelings are going to get hurt. Debra wants women to take care of themselves, and to live longer healthier lives!!! Yet wimpy salon readers can't take it. Grow up.

attn: rebecalouise

Y'know, you're right. I am hurting, so is Debra. We are people who know how tough it is to take care of a body. I'm hurting from my jog and lift yesterday. I'm hurting from watching obese children waddle down the street this morning. I'm hurting when I look into the eyes of a 300 pound 17 year old girl on the sidewalk. People like Debra and myself care about other people. We care about their health enough to hurt their feelings in its pursuit.

Theater aficionatos....

First time I laughed out loud reading King. Which would sound like less of a slam if people knew how little I laugh out loud.

LeBron. I'm glad a couple people in Akron decided to make him.

I thought about yesterdays column while I was watching baseball last night. I figured out why it's so difficult to project prospects - I just don't want to explain it.

Redshirting children

Rich people are terrified their kids won't turn out great. I laughed the 'redshirting' off all the way until college. Then I heard of a "PG" year. That one is even funnier. Rich people, who have marginal children, send them to a boarding school for a 'Post Graduate' year. Another year of high school (can you freaking imagine?!?!?!?), to help their odds of getting into a school they don't deserve to attend anyway. HAHA.

Even if I end up making a lot of money some day - I will never hold my children back to boost anyone's esteem. The best way for a kid to grow and develop is to not put him in a situation where he is a year older than his 'peers'. It tells him, "there was something wrong with you".

Good job

You're right. Our country (I'm looking at you media) needs to quit pulling a Rickey Bobby (running around making an ass of yourself like you're on fire) everytime someone says something about race.

As an American, I take his comments as a compliment. Think about it. Our country must be pretty freaking great if baseball players will do as they're instructed to remain in it. Considering how fucked up we think America is now, that's a compliment. If anyone wants to be appaled by latin players living in poor conditions in the US - you haven't travelled Latin America.

I currently play on a baseball team where I am one of two non-latinos. I've seen some actions that have proved to me that Gary was talking about players from the islands, latinos already entrenched in the US.

Black Americans aren't playing baseball because of it's excrutiatingly slow pace.

All that aside, I don't think his comments were probing race, more geography, sports geopolitics and economics. Is everyone from an baseball island automatically the same race?

I'm not allowed to drop the F-Bomb in here... or Salon editors have problems with people who know what the eff they're talking about.
