Correction...

This inane article might have passed the credibility test had the writer not referred to the books as being written by "four liberal authors". Matt Welch is the editor of the libertarian Reason magazine. I think he'd be shocked to find out he's a liberal author. Of course terms like liberal and conservative have very little meaning in the current political climate.

Good Analysis

On the money Glenn, McCain's surge obsession is at the root of the "we're winning" canard. Of course, to question just what constitutes winning (total genocide of the Iraqi populace?) is disallowed in the political discourse of the U.S. McCain and his neo-con cronies will never stop re-fighting the war on Vietnam. They are unable to let go of the discredited narrative of the spit upon returning vet. This connects with your last post of the cry baby/stab in the back narrative of the right. Drum up resentment, then exploit the poor rubes who buy it. The Reagan era is finally coming to an end in the worst way, the bailout will fail and the U.S. will sink deeper into economic collapse. Of course with a large majority of Democrat politician's voting for the bailout the Republican's will place all blame squarely on their backs. Obama better be reading up on FDR cuz once elected he's gonna need to come up with a new New Deal and pronto. It's probably too late already.

Also, I can not get that satanic that wink of Sarah Palin's out of my head.

That was good

Glenn,

I quite enjoyed your interview with HH and found him refreshingly even tempered in his manner. He did focus rather predictably on the Hamas as terrorsist/Arabs with grievances towards Israel want to kill all the Jews "argument", but at least he kept his voice down and let you speak.

My comment concerns your hewing to a rather mainstream tack regarding the recent, and to my observation Israel's most egregious and unjustifiable aggression. I'm wondering if this was deliberate with the idea that Hewitt's listeners would be a hostile audience. Whatever the intent, I was surprised by the host's manner and found it a fairly productive discussion.

Let Netanyahu win

Gideon Levy's recent column, I think, is (as always) especially insightful regarding the current Israeli political climate.

omooex, Publicola

I think Levy's comment regarding Obama speaks more to the rather distorted view that is widely held overseas concerning the election of Obama. There is a belief that he is a new kind of politician or leader with a firmer moral bearing. This of course remains to be seen (I personally doubt he's all that different from his predecessors). I agree with oomoex that their likely to be little friction between these two. Where Levy is correct, I think, is in believing Netenyahu's government, which will undoubtedly be more overtly racist in it's policies, will bring more global attention to Israel's morally indefensible crimes against the occupied Palestinian people.
