Or not.
My guess is that many of us didn't attend a Memorial Day service, or parade, or even watch one on television. Memorial Day is a day for long road trips, for picnics, for grilling dogs & burgers, for getting together with relatives. Basically, just another three-day weekend. Notable mainly because that's when the outdoor swimming pools open (and you can get your first sunburn of the summer!)
America's soldiers haven't fought for "our freedom" since WWII. They have fought to protect our Corporations, and too often, our Delusions, like the Domino Theory and Saddam's Nukes.
The 1960s was a time when college students, raised on the dogma of American goodness, rose in protest as they realized the United States wasn't practicing what it claimed to. They started movements, got into politics, to correct the perceived deficiencies. America ended up better for it - more free, more equal, more open, its government more accountable, just as it had always said it was.
Most of these reforms have been reversed by The Current Occupant and his Republican predecessors.
Maybe it's time for another revolution. Maybe we can "get back to where [we] once belonged."
""Did you know that every room in the house has an exit?"
This is actually pretty smart. Building code requires that all bedrooms have an exit directly to the outside - generally a window. But, if you're concerned about safety in the event of fire or earthquake, an exit door sounds pretty thorough.
But, the guy was an engineer. The weird part is how we all apparently love to laugh at people's smart decisions. (That means they're some kind of nerrrrds or geeeeeks or somethin'!! Haw, haw, haw!)
Insert the appropriate caustic reference to Americans electing George (W.) Bush, the Lesser twice.
His response was perfect. I've grown increasingly tired of the doomsday whines of people on my side.
Democracy, if it is to exist, is us. The government is us. If it needs work - well, who you gonna call?
(Hint: the Ghost Busters are out of business.)
Ms. Havrilesky says Eventually he loses the suitcase and is rescued". That's as bad as assuming that Princeton Plainsboro is in Seattle. The man was nearly drowned, deliberately by his Coast Guard "rescuer." The Coast Guarder grabbed Esteban by his hair and held his head underwater until he let go of the suitcase, for the single purpose of making him let go of the suitcase.
I don't know if this is some special rescue technique when people persist in clinging to things that are valuable to them, or just standard military-issue brutality, or even regular all-American anti-brown people-ism. But the guy didn't "lose" the suitcase. He was made to drop it.
Now, about Dr. House losing all three of his lackeys. Okay, it's shocking. I was surprised. (No, I'm not terribly bright.) But: It allows the studio to bring in some cheaper replacements. It gives plot opportunities, as Dr. House again gets to interview and make decisions, and be criticized by Drs. Wilson and Cuddy. And it rids us of the near-incestuous relationships that were developing among Drs. Chase, Cameron, and Foreman. Seriously - who needs another "Scrubs"?
Well, of course the woman is supposed to Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives. Notice that she isn't speaking up, either, to confront Bully George.
Nor is either she or Harry "bulking up," the better to confront the really-not-that-big sand-kicking bully. And that's much of the problem.
Mr. Scherer cited a litany of Richardson's gaffs, in which the Governor said one thing, and a few days later, reversed - that is, corrected - himself.
But that may not be as bad as it's been depicted. Look what we've got now in the White House - a Current Occupant who can never admit he was wrong, never admit he's changing course when he changes course.
In contrast, Gov. Richardson is establishing a record of catching himself within a few days and coming back to explain why his previous position was wrong, and why he's supporting a different one. It may indicate that he's open to receiving new information (i.e., "reality-based"), humble enough to publically repudiate himself, sufficiently intellectual to explain why, and trusts the public's ability to understand.
Mr. Scherer didn't go into Gov. Richardson's record - that wasn't the topic of his article, after all - but Bill has been an absolute whirlwind of activity and initiatives in his four-plus years as Governor of New Mexico. Plus, he's gotten a good number of his policies implemented. His "record" isn't just a bunch of impressive job titles - like an older George Bush's was.
Moreover, if you're looking for someone to sit down with and have a beer or a bowl of green chile, you'd be a lot better off with Bill than Georgie Boy. Just ask the North Koreans.
Full disclosure: I live in New Mexico.
Yet another David observes "To me, Chelsea's life says they must have been pretty good parents, and I agree. What with the politicking, lawyering, and ultimately more than 8 years of fierce and unfair attacks, the Clintons still managed to be good parents, judging by the results.
It's irresistable to compare Chelsea Clinton with the "Busch" twins - renowned as slackers, drunken shiksas, and apparently, even under Secret Service eye, druggies. Or, to go back a little further, H.W.'s dysfunctional brood - hard drinkin' womanizer "Junior", Neil the Crook (and his many prostitutes), John (aka "J.E.B.") the slimy pol, and Marvin, another crooked businessman. (I haven't heard anything bad yet about the one daughter in the litter.)
I suggest we try to look at Senator Clinton and the other Democrats using a little more of our brains and less of our guts. Remember where our guts got us in the last two Presidential elections?
