Who cares about this guy? The issue of how we work is way more interesting
[Read the article: I'm married with kids -- and in love with a prostitute]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Didn't have a whole lot to add to the commentary addressed to this guy, but cosmicmojo's letter:
"You have to pay the mortgage (or are you and your prostitute going to move back in with Mom and Dad?), get up every morning and plod to your job, pay the electric bill and live for the weekend."
prompted me to write.
The way we work and the fact that it's plodding is very much a symptom of "we've always done it this way." We take our jobs seriously because our supervisors take it seriously. The fact is, if our attitude toward work were different, it wouldn't be so dreary.
One thing, telecommuting could be way stepped up for most people. Less office, less trudging, better environment, less use of gas.
Another thing, if we could just drop the facade that the work most of us do is actually of any importance whatsoever, most of us would be a lot happier. If we went to work being able to admit it was a necessary evil, it would drop a lot of the pretense that what we're doing is "important."
And we dropped the facade, we could give people more sabbaticals to do things they truly wanted to do. Note, this doesn't even necessarily mean more vacation time. It just means that if someone wanted to take 2-3 months off periodically, unpaid, they'd be allowed to do it.

Gay Cowboy Movies
[Read the article: "Brokeback Mountain"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Haven't seen the movie, but I read the story it's based on, and wonder if Stephanie's review is affected by the short story. I always thought that story was over-rated. It did seem like something that was put together at a writer's colony (UCross, I think), and I always thought the writer had decided, let's take these men who have a supermasculine image, make them gay, and see what happens. Not that it would never happen, I was just always aware of the author's choices while reading of the story.
About 30 years ago there was another gay cowboy movie (sort of)-- Midnight Cowboy. Have seen bits and pieces, and it wasn't about a real cowboy, but it was daring for the time, and I suspect would still be daring today.

Caitlin
[Read the article: Caitlin Flanagan: Lobotomy's best spokeswoman]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I don't like her, but she seemed to be aware of what Stephen was doing, and playing along. It made for a kind of boring interview, and Colbert could have pushed her hypocrisy a lot harder than he did, but she definitely seemed to have chosen to match his "persona" with her own.

Another take on this
[Read the article: I've had it!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Something that hasn't been addressed that seems to affect my dealings with the world: I live in one of the largest cities in the country, and what I've noticed is that there are 1) more people in this area than there used to be and 2) way more cars. This makes traffic worse than it was ten years ago, and much worse than it was twenty years ago. I can't help think that with the increase in the number of people and traffic in a given area, that stress goes up. Add to that the decline in driving habits. People simply do not signal, drive at appropriate speeds for the neighborhood they are in, and brake as they used to. Regardless of how calm a person, on a hot day, when traffic is backed up for a couple miles, it's aggrevating, to say the least. My own solution is to hopefully move to a less congested, somewhat rural area within the next few years.

Is it really a cat?
[Read the article: Can I kill a cat if it poops in my yard?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Cat's almost always bury their poop. So unless the cat never learned to do this or is missing the instinct, it's probably something else. Dog or raccoon maybe. If it is a cat, it may be a feral cat.

Where is Heather and what have you done with her?
[Read the article: Finale wrap-up: "Lost"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The last few columns have been so different in style from the usual columns that either someone else is writing these, or all of Heather's idiosyncracies have been stamped out of her from above. This used to be one of my favorite TV columns, now it's just dull and insipid as everything else.

What about Austin?
[Read the article: I'm drowning in debt and dreaming of New York]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Not sure what Texas town you're in, but Austin sounds like it has a lot going on, and Houston, though not exactly cutting edge, probably has a decent art and music scene.
Don't declare bankruptcy for 4500. In terms of debt, that's nothing, and you'll regret it. Even if you can do it, your credit rating will be trashed for 7 years. Which means you won't be able to buy a car, house, or other large purchase unless you pay cash.

isn't it ironic?
[Read the article: Dancing in the dark]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Had he met her a few years later, none of those things would have made a difference. He'd have his Bettie Page lookalike.
As for sleeping with her, it's hard to tell whether he was disoriented because he'd come to a new threshold of his blindness, or because he was repulsed. E.g.--had he known what she looked like from the get-go, would he have made the decision to sleep with her, though she wasn't his ideal physical standard?

But wait...
[Read the article: Senate approves detainee bill; Bush attacks Democrats as soft on terror]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]What's driving me crazy about this is the assumption that it's fine if Republicans vote for a bill that distroys our liberties, while Democrats should know better. They should ALL know better. Just because they're Republicans doesn't mean they shouldn't be held accountable.

dterrydraw: for real or satire?
[Read the article: The right on Foley: Someone is to blame, and it isn't us]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]They are a ruse. Go to his web site. He is a writer and artist. Probably trying to get publicity for his work, but he seems rather talented, so why not?

Ever heard of adoption?
[Read the article: I want to carry a child for my sister]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]This is horrible advice. Not only does this totally disrespect your husband, it's the ultimate in self-absorbtion. There's tons of unwanted children out there. Look into bi-racial or foreign adoption. Don't carry your sister's child, hep her look into adoptions. You still get a niece/nephew, your sister gets a child, and there's the added benefit of having given a child a loving home.
