Rahm said that??
[Read the article: Are Democrats really so lame?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I hadn't heard that. I feel better about him already. If he really said that, and meant it, then maybe sanity has a chance in our government yet.
those who accuse some of us of being "haters" conveniently forget that we hate Bush and Cheney and Lieberman *for a reason.* For many reasons. We don't hate them because they're hopeless assholes--although they are.
Had Bush and Cheney behaved like wise, responsible adults in power, they could be as asshole as they wanted, I would not have cared. Had they done the People's business, had they run the country to preserve the commons, to make this a better country and a better world, they could be the biggest assholes on the planet..ok by me. If they're doing the job, doing the job for benefit of all, observing the Golden Rule at the very least, then they're ok in my book, no matter how rotten they may be personally.
That's the part the right-wing gabblers obsessed with BDS don't get: we wouldn't hate them if there weren't lots of good reasons to do so. The right-wing gabblers *can't* afford to get that. Then they'd have to argue on the merits, and they'd lose. Badly.

great post, Glenn.
[Read the article: Why is the Democratic Congress so unpopular?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Just an attaboy from one of the teeming millions out here.
Why the dems cannot see the truth of the simple equation you lay out in your last paragraph is just beyond me.
Maybe you could spend a column exploring just why the dems don't get it. What's going on? Are they simply so beholden to their own special interests that they do not dare do the right thing? I mean, what in hell is it? Pelosi and Reid, whatever else they may be, are clearly not stupid the way someone like Dennis Hastert is stupid.
So what's going on?

sad
[Read the article: No visible panty lines]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]the clothes seemed kinda boring to me. Not boring in the sense that they are too loose, or cover too much, but boring in the sense that they don't say much. Good, or bad.
But I can tell you that most responsible fathers in this world would be more than happy to see their daughters wear this kind of clothing..or something even more conservative...forever. This company will probably do well..they're tapping into a universal parental anxiety. The question is, will the young women go along? If you're a Duggar girl, you already are. But there are lots of young women who would not wear that stuff, however much their paranoid parents wish they would.
I agree, the message is altogether too simple-minded, but let's not for get who they're talking to, either.
---and speaking of the Duggars--couldn't you speak about them all day??--did anyone follow the link on their site to the *modest swimwear* site? I was transfixed. These poor girls all looked like they'd just walked out of a time-machine from the New Jersey boardwalk, circa 1893, and maybe not even *that* flattering. More like the beach on the Salt Lake, circa 1880... I'm trying to imagine a young woman wearing something like that on the beach at Laguna, right there at PCH and Broadway, this weekend. It'd be quite the statement. The mind boggles---although, we're pretty live-and-let-live down here on the south-left coast. Likely no-one would care, beyond a few incredulous looks.

antioxidant study a joke
[Read the article: Can a virus make you fat?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]the levels of antioxidants used in the study are far too small to have much, if any, theraputic or preventative effect.
I can't explain the apparently increased melanoma risk in the non-placebo group, other than simple bad luck: there may have been a greater genetic risk of the disease in the non-placebo group, that was not controlled for, or could not be controlled for, due to a lack of data.
But the amounts of antioxidants were far too low for any effect. I can't imagine what these guys were thinking. But, then, orthodox MDs doing research into non-drug supplements is nearly always dogged by this kind of basic error. These guys don't get it. They get almost no training in diet, nutrition, or supplementation.
Had they used 1000 IUs of mixed tocopherols with tocotrienols from natural sources, 1-2 grams of natural vitamin C, and 20000 units of beta carotene, or an A/D mix, per day, maybe they'd have seen something.
These doses are completely harmless, and might well have shown some effect. The doses they used? A joke. Meaningless.

dear god
[Read the article: Carl Levin reveals the Democrats' Iraq "strategy"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]...that's really all I can do. Invoke a god I don't believe in. These people are mad. Completely mad. When is *someone,* *anyone* going to stand up to those whackjobs at AIPAC? When?
And I'm losing heart over the Democrats in Congress daily. They might be a better choice than the GOP to rule us, but, apparently, not by much.
It's a very high stakes game that's playing out here. And I would really like to know why AIPAC has so much power in it. Israeli right-wing ideologues should not be telling us what to do. We should be telling THEM what to do.

uh...I don't think so.
[Read the article: The enduring myth of Americans' dislike of investigations]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]actually, I think these right-wingers DO read the polls, and that's why they're promulgating a totally false view of the will of the "American Public.." to counteract the possible effect of these on the base..and other pundits, and politicians.
I think these guys have been reading the writing on the wall for awhile now, and they're simply doing what they've always done: lying to a constituency that apparently prefers to be lied to.
Far from being uninformed, I suspect they're thoroughly informed, and continue to lie, increasingly frantically, to mitigate the effect of the polls. They're like the little kid who covers his eyes and then says "you can't see me."
