Original article: The risks of staying

@glenn and DClaw

Glenn wrote, in part:

"If Bush kept the troops in Iraq despite Congressional de-funding, then he would be impeached. The possibility that Bush will do something that extreme is hardly a reason to avoid taking the step that Congress believes ought to be taken."

Note that I was one of those giving "feckless democrats" an excuse to vote for the funding bill, by suggesting Bush would create a deliberate shortage of resources for the troops, then allow word to trickle back, then accuse the Dems of the very things he's guilty of..if the Dems defunded the war.

Mind you, I made this argument not because I thought it was sufficient reason (to a principled politician) to vote for more funding, but rather, as an example of just what lengths Bush and his people will go to, to hang this war around someone's neck besides their own.

And given the way things are right now, it's very likely MSM would swallow Bush's lie, hook, line, and sinker all, and hang "not supporting the troops" around the Dems' collective neck.

The Dems are playing a careful game here, I believe. It's a game with lives, yes. But they want to win in 2008. They believe, right or wrong, that if they defund the war now, the GOP will whip them with it for the next 18 months, and that's probably true.

What do you say Glenn? It is absolutely the right thing to do to end this war immediately, without ceremony. But Bush would not end it, no matter what the dems do. He would not be impeached for not ending it (we all know this: the Dems absolutely are not going to impeach the man. If he were shown to be serial child-molester, he'd not be impeached by this congress. In our hearts, we all know this is true.)...so the impeachment argument doesn't hold water.

Bush would have to go to the Capitol and shoot Pelosi before he was held accountable for anything...and I'm not at all convinced that he couldn't weasel his way out of that. He's weaseled out of everything else.

The GOP has utterly and completely broken our political system, aided and abetted by our MSM. The dems back in power may or may not fix it. But you can bet that a Rudy Giuliani or Fred Thompson back in power, with a GOP congress, would NEVER fix it.

I hate supporting the lesser of two evils. I do. But go back to 1929 Germany. If the choice is the Weimar Republic, or the Nazis, which do you choose? Because that is, increasingly, the choice we're facing, and you know that better than most commentators.

The GOP is a fascist organization by the most strict definition of the term. It is that way by design. I defy anyone to argue that Karl Rove did use the Nazis as a model when he remade the party. It's so blazingly obvious, an idiot could see it.

I'd rather have corrupt democrats running the government than a fascist-party clone, any day.

By defunding the war now, or by impeaching the President, we risk another GOP win in 2008. I no longer trust the American voter to get this right. And in a close race, the GOP will simply cheat, if they can get away with it..and they have in the past.

Had Al Gore taken office in 2000, as he would have if the GOP had not stolen that election, we would be in a different world. So I don't buy the "they're all the same" argument. Not for a second. That argument helped get us where we are.

So, I'll take the lesser of two evils. I hate it. But I'll take it. And I'll hope for better.

But we simply cannot, CANNOT, risk another GOP victory in 2008. We cannot.

You may believe that defunding the war would not result in a Dem loss in 2008. Clearly House Dems feel differently.

perp walk

I'm having real trouble imagining a greater pleasure in life than watching Richard Cheney do a perp walk in an orange jump-suit.

There are greater pleasures, of course, but that one would be right at the top of the list.

He won't, but if there were any justice in this world, he would. As one of the world's single most contemptible human beings, it is a bit of a wonder why Congress hasn't at least started impeachment hearings against Cheney. Who would want to protect him? And with approval ratings in single digits, where's the political danger in so doing?

I don't get that one, and I never will.
