By saying it should be required viewing for any Pussycat Dolls tryouts you opened up the door to a whole slew of groups that probably should be required to see it. Let me suggest one: the whole American public so they can see what the republican party is trying to turn us into. Contrary to popular opinion, these people are still obsessed with dragging America kicking and screaming back to the days when women knew their place and men were the sole bread winners. I live in the bible belt, trust me, this stereotype is still true. Couple that with the overwhelming corporate greed required to make ads for crap you know is harmful and may not even believe in, and you have a perfect example of the modern marketplace.
'Scuse me while I put my sides back together! And since when do "moral absolutists" use the phrase "assclown"? I guess they only care about morality when it comes to consentual sex, huh?
Stop the presses! Republicans are bigots who only think christianity should be represented in government? Well, knock me over with a feather, I'm in shock! Republicans already declared jihad on this country, they just call it the "culture war", same objective though, get rid of anything that doesn't conform to their narrow religious beliefs.
How could you possibly think they don't care about women? Don't you know forcing women to raise children they can't afford is always in the woman's best interest? How can you not see that?
Last time I checked, their claim to "moral authority" was based around condemning consentual private behavior. I don't see how that gets them bumped to the front of the line into the pearly gates! Though I must admit I'm glad the same old crap about gays, God, and guns is finally starting to fall apart. I still can't believe it worked back in 2004 when we were in the middle of a war!
I hope, though it's too soon to tell, that this is the start of a long term trend. I hope that this means the "culture war" is finally beginning it's death throws. My fear is that this is just a backlash to the war and that once the war is over, all the old crap will again resurface and start working again. I guess only time will tell.
Even if this is just a fad due to the war, one of the bright spots that may come out of it is that maybe the military and their supporters will stop giving republicans a free pass on military issues. When a politician says he wants a strong defense, you might want to ask what he plans to do with it.
"No End in Sight" sounds a lot like a recent "Frontline" episode I saw that covered pretty much the same ground. I think "Frontline" deserves some props for being the only free news orginization willing to give the war any real thoughtful examination. You would have to look at fringe cable channels or MSNBC for shows like "Democracy Now" and "Countdown with Kieth Olberman" to find anyone else on TV willing to give the war any real thought.
This doesn't speak well for the major networks, does it?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't this "women are leaving the workplace" trend been going on for at least a decade now? If it's really happening, why continue to write articles about it? If it was really happening in large enough numbers to write about, then the trend would have already expanded enough that you wouldn't need to write about it anymore. At least that's the way I see it. Why keep pushing something that's supposedly already happened?
Anyone who thinks that there is a new wave of conservativism sweeping our kids needs to visit a mall. Last time I checked, "Spencers" and "Hot Topic" weren't pulling the middle finger tee-shirts and Jenna Jameson posters off the wall just yet. I live in Missouri, one of the many buckles of the bible belt, and the trend that I've noticed is a growing interest in libertarianism. These people see both parties the same way; negatively. They have no love for this war, and they have no love for the culture war.
Hell, commercials for local porn stores air fairly regularly on local channels.
If this article was done the same way Bush conducts his "town hall meetings" then I wouldn't count on it being that accurate an assesment of the population.
If you were to ask these people what their biggest concerns were, I could bet actual money that Iraq wouldn't even be on the list. The "culture warriors" live in a whole different reality then the rest of us, where monogamous gays are the biggest threat to America right now and Islam itself attacked America, not just a fringe group.
It wouldn't matter what else was going on in the country, gay marraige and abortion are always the most important thing in the world and events like 9/11 are just the natural progression to the end times. It doesn't surprise me that the culture war took a back seat this time around.
I hope this really does mean that the "christinization" of America is finally beginning to wane.
