I'm sick and tired of the liberals being the ones who have to compromise! We have to bend over backwards to try and appeal to a bunch of hateful bigots who just want to run everyone else's lives? Fuck that shit! Why should we give them anything if they aren't willing to give a little too? I'm tired of hearing how "evangelicals" (as if their the only christians who matter anyway or as if all christian bigots are evangelical) won't vote for a democrat because we don't hate gays or tell women what to do with their bodies. Maybe they need to consider that there are more important things in the world then other people having sex or, shocker!, other people's sex lives are none of their damn business in the first place! Wow! What a concept!
What are they willing to give up, hmmm? What do I get in return for strapping some gay kid to a fence post and flogging him to death? If I have to hate people for not being like me, I want some huge payoff. The reality is that Obama will likely not win over most evangelicals, their loyalty is built around hate, not love. Talking about helping the poor doesn't matter to these so-called "christians". And they are so ingrained in the republican party anyway that any deviation from massive tax cuts for the wealthy would not get their votes anyway, no matter how many hateful bigots he puts on tour with him!
If we really want to release this country from the stranglehold of the religoius right, appealing to their worst instincts isn't the way to do it, challenging their beleifs is. Going on tour with a hate group isn't going to make this country better. We need to talk to evangelicals the same way we do to everyone else, confront the very real problems that actually affect their lives and remind them that Bush didn't do squat for them. Even the stupidest hick can tell when he is drowning. We need to stop being afraid of our own platform and actually talk about the very real possibility that, yes, the war in Iraq may have been based on lies and that just because a politician says "Jesus" a bunch of times, doesn't mean he gives a shit about them. And, if possible, remind them that gays are acutally human too and that a president serves ALL Americans, not just christians.
It is just an excuse to gay bash and run other people's sex lives.
In order to be a christian in the eyes of republicans you have to hate gays, stick your nose into other people's bedrooms, and...well...not much else.
I don't think Jesus had a whole lot to say about either one of those things but he sure had a lot to say about poverty and helping the poor. How exactly did a religion that was basically set up to root for the underdogs and teach respect for others become the weapon of rich elitists to get power by using hate? That has to be the biggest inverse of a philosophy since...well...since the Roman church turned all those pagan holidays into christian ones.
Since the article is about him, I'm not a huge fan of Warren either. I still beleive he is a hack for the republican party who is just trying to deflect some of the rightful criticism the evangelical movement has gained the past few years. If he smiles enough and talks about the environment (depending on who he backs this year should show you how much of a priority that actually is to him) and poverty you might be willing to overlook the fact that he still thinks gays should be treated as second class citizens and giving tax breaks to the rich (of which he is one) will benefit the economy.
The past decade I have lost my faith, literally, because of the corrupt marraige of church and state that this country has had to endure for the past eight years but even before then I saw that the religoius right were taking over and the definition of freedom itself was in great jeporady. This has to end. We cannot allow the litmus test for office be what magic sky daddy someone hopes is up there.
How is it our fault you people stick your noses in where they don't belong? Gay marraige, abortion, none of these things are any of your business. For the past eight years we got stuck with what essentially amounts to a sock puppet running the country because you cared more about other people's sex lives then you did your own needs.
"Libs" don't get to decide these things because the only people who should are the people doing them. It does not affect your marriage if two guys want to marry each other just as it does not affect your children if some woman you don't even know has an abortion. It is no more my business then it is yours becuase it doesn't affect me either. So many conservatives have made sex some kind of litmus test for public office. Especiallly in regards to other people's sex lives. And often at the expense of more pressing issues that affect everyone regardless of party or beleifs.
