I also see a lot of other contradictions with this thinking, starting with the fact that for years these are the same people who have been saying that America doesn't need the rest of the world, and Europe in particular. Now they, as Americans, are telling the rest of the world what to do. They talk about how much they love America's freedoms but what is it that they want? Everyone to live their lives the same way. You have to get married, you have to have as many children as possible, women have to stay home and take care of said children, the men have to go to work and prop up the market economy so their buddies who pay the bills for the republican party can stay rich. They don't want anybody rocking the boat with dirty pictures or books or magazines or movies or questioning the market system.
Radicalized muslim groups in Euprope are a real problem, but fighting religious extremism with a different type of religious extremism offers no incintives. Secularism is the answer to religous extremism, not more of the same. If they are really that concerned about religous extremists taking over Europe, then the best solution is to speak out against it and have the kind of on-air discussions about which society is more inclusive for everyone that the American religous right who are so concerned about this don't want to have in this country.
If some of you want to that's fine, but living here in a red state I can tell you he certainly didn't create the hatred (and that's what it is, don't let these "christians" tell you otherwise) for gays people have out here. It's true that people who would not have turned out to vote showed up at the polls just to support these bigoted amendments, the local radio stations even talked about it at the time. To me, blaming Newsom for what happended is like blaming the civil rights movement for the south going to republicans. The whites had no reason to oppose it in the first place.
Maybe they fed off of what Newsom did, maybe they didn't, the point is, these laws had no reason to be written and no one had any reason to support them. If anything, Newsom exposed the true face of America towards gays with his little stunt. After over a decade of televison telling us how "progressive" everyone was becoming on this issue, we finally got to see the truth. It also gives the gay community a reason to go after their critics and show that they truly are a persecuted minority. For years they claim they don't hate gays, now we have to evidence to prove them wrong. If your willing to show up at the polls to deny them equality under the law when you wouldn't have shown up otherwise, I can't think of any other way of seeing it.
and I can assure you that no, we haven't fixed all of our problems yet. In fact our "Godly" governor just stepped down. Presumably for a corruption investigation. I can also assure you that much of what happens out here in the bible belt is incredibly hypocritical. Over half the population are chain smokers who get drunk on Saturday nights and cuss like sailors yet think that being gay is the worst thing you can possible do. I think that we are still considered the meth capital. The things that are considered moral priorities almost all consist of sex and don't affect anyone outside of the person doing them. I honestly don't know how this stuff got prioritized. Especially given the fact that, at a time when questioning your parents got you stoned to death, the punishment for abortion in the bible was a fine.
That attitude is exactly why we can put a man on the moon, but we still haven't figured out how the female anatomy works. At least we would actually get something out of giving women more orgasms (men get to have more sex, women get...well...orgasms), what did we ever get out of the moon besides a bunch of rocks? At this rate, we'll have starships that go past the speed of light before we figure out how to sexually gratify a women.
The person who said that it's funny all these studies are coming out of Europe was spot on. If some lab tried to engineer a test like this in the states, some republican senator up for re-election would use it as a wedge issue and accuse the facility of taking tax payer money for "obscene" research (and of course the money, if it was getting any at all, would probably be going to some other experiment like cars that run on water or some other useful thing). We are a prudish society that worships violence. Maybe that's why the red states have higher unmarried pregnanacy and divorce rates.
I thought John McCain WAS a liberal? What happened Rush? Why all this concern for someone you claim isn't really one of you? I know conservatives are stupid, but even his listeners must remember what happened ten years ago. Especially given the fact that they still won't shut up about it. I don't recall the NYTimes or any other media outlet cutting ol' "Slick WIlly" a break.
But if Rush tells you to forget it happened then to be a good dittohead you forget it happened.
