I just saw it on the news, congress just gave Bush what he wanted. This is why the cons don't see us as a threat, we keep caving! It's past time congress did it's fucking job and actually practiced some form of oversight! Democrats are going to have to get togher if they want to be taken seriously and this aint it!
The real reason the right opposes islam is because it is a threat to the spread of christianity. Islam and christianity have been competing for new converts around the world for years, Islam is in first, christianity is in second. I believe this religious competition is the real reason the right here at home is so afraid of islam.
Bush was never a "close the borders" republican, not even back in 2000. The base had to know this, it's not like he made it a secret. I think the rights fury over Bush's immigration stance is just a way of venting over larger issues. They saw him, and if you talk to them, many still try to portary him, as a messiah. Not just on the war either, in 2000 all kinds of promises were made and none have come true. He was going to overturn Roe, stop those filthy sodomites from getting the same rights as everyone else, and magically turn everyone in america into a christian.
To the corporate wing he made all kinds of promises there he couldn't keep also. He was going to give back so much tax money that the public school system would collapse on it's own making Newt Gingrich's dream of abolishing the dept. of education unnecessary. He was going to force little old ladies to work into their ninties by abolishing the Social Security system. That didn't happen either. 9/11 put a damper on a lot of things they wanted Bush to do. This is the only way they have left to get to him.
Even the most brainless dittohead can see a lame duck in the water.
I don't think that "24" is failing because people are getting wiser, but because it is getting older. The novelty has run it's course. Our losing the Iraq war has something to do with it, but even if the war had gone well, this show still would be getting long in the tooth. It is a perfect reflection of the republican worldview, everything is formulaic and gets resolved easily. The good guy always wins, and in the real world that can get worn out very quickly. People get bored with it for the same reason they get bored with comic books later on in life. One could argue that this show would have died a lot sooner without 9/11 to hold on to an audience for it.
I must admit, I don't watch either show, but it doesn't sound like I need to watch "24" to understand it. It sounds like every Saturday morning cartoon I watched growing up looked exactly like it. Bearing in mind, this is the way the administration and their whole party thinks the real world actually functions. That to me is even more scary then another terrorist attack because it says to me that even if we were attacked, the "party of strong defense" wouldn't have a real world grasp on how to handle the situation anyway. As the post 9/11 era has proved.
I think it is rather telling that the only person who tried to defend this place used an emotional argument instead of a technical one:
Children should be taught creationism because it will prevent school shootings, not because it's supported by facts (because it's not).
And they didn't use their real name to boot! If this is the strongest argument anyone can muster for this place, then they have more problems to worry about then what we think of them. If these people are so sure that their religion is the truth, why don't they spend as much time looking into the history of the bible as they spend on looking for historical fallacies in the fossil record? Probably because they already know what they would find, even less evidence to support it then evolution has.
There is probably very little about Ron Paul I would agree with, except the getting out of Iraq and the abolishment of obscenity laws. But I wonder, how many obscenity prosecutions have there been on the national level recently? I know there was that big brewhaha over Janet Jackson and her nipple a few years ago, but has there been a huge resurgence of this? I know that it was something that John Ashcroft wanted to do when he took over the AG's office early on, before 9/11 forced him to do his real job.
At any rate, I notice that the libertarian movement is growing larger and larger in this country then ever before, particularly in the past few years since the Iraq war started. I think this has something to do with many middle of the road republicans sick and tired of their party being run by a bunch of theocrats.
The thing that struck me the most about this place was an entire wing dedicated to the "evils" in society supposedly created by the acceptance of evolution. This should tell you right there what the real objective of this place is, it aint to present an "alternative theory".
In the interest of fairness, I think the nations natural history museums should have to build a wing dedicated to the "evils" of accepting creationism. That way people get a REAL balanced view. You could have a section on the inquisition, or witch burnings, or that gay kid that was flogged to death in Wyoming about ten years ago. That way people get a fair and balanced look at what the world run by creationists would, and did at one point in time, really look like.
