He is the prime reason that

NC is home to so many military bases. Sitting on the foreign relations committee he pushed through a large number of spending bills that created or enlarged the military bases, mostly in the eastern part of the state. Ft. Bragg, Camp Lejeune, Pope AFB, Seymour Johnson AFB, Cherry Point NAS, MCAS New River and the ever mysterious Harvey Point.

You are just quibbling about numbers

Maybe it's 3 or 10 or 40 or more. But if you imagine that biofuels are free non polluting don't harm brown people and unicorns then you are huffing paint again.

BTW Rads, Income distribution in oil free Brazil is even MORE uneven than in the US. In Brazil there are a few obscenely weathly, a tottering middle class trying to hang on, and a huge underclass.

The British were in Iraq for 37 years

It did little good. Some people are just ungovernable w/o force.

So....

The price of gasoline has gone up and that fact suddenly hit urban hipsters in the face because in San Fran, like most larg-ish cities, they have mass transit so far a large percentage of those people, car driving is more of a leisurely activity and not a necessity.

Ok, tomorrow we will be covering the wetness of water.

Obama, like America, has NO position

Iraq has become one of those bellwether issues like abortion and gun control that has NO resolution nor does anyone truly want it resolved. They want it to stand as their brand of personal outrage about something or other.

Moreover the US has never actually had a real-life foreign policy vis a vis Iraq. It's all 100% straight up crisis management.

Farhad

Good, that's a GOOD thing. Sue the carrier and the host. Not the endpoint. The RIAA only beats up on those who don't fight back. Trust me, phone companies fight back.

Rosenkavalier

doesn't matter, he wasn't after a true 'piano' sound. He was after a sound he heard in his head.

Of course the real obvious solution is to defer retirement

55? You must be a dumbass. 65? That's so 1967. 70? Nah. 75? Getting warm.

If those slackers simply elect to keep working and not be a burden to the system it would help. There's no iron law of physics that says you're entitled, you have a right, to kick back and live off the backs of others. Back in the day the average 'retiree' at the inception of the Social Security system collected benefits for 13 months. Then died. What is that age now? 80? Ok so make people work until 80. I am 1 billion percent behind that.

I for one would be more than happy to watch

All of you freeze and starve in the dark. We should take steps to do away with all technology and all products that have anything to do with oil, gas, coal and nuclear immediately. After the plagues and riots and civil wars claim 90% of you the world will be a better place.

Regardless of who wins

Be it McCain the Membrane or be it Trandimensional Buddah of the Obamaverse, we will be in Iraq until 2013 or when Iran goes nuclear, whichever is first. And since the Iranian defense minister just announced that they will kill the Israelis (who don't exist) with nukes (they aren't making) on top of missiles (they didn't buy from Korea) I would think that that date will be somewhat sooner than 2013. In fact the best thing for Salonotrons would be if Iran ramps up their nuclear program ASAP and makes a credible path towards actually using them on Americans (boo hiss) or the Jews (double plus boo hiss). This would have the effect of calling their bluff and driving the evil Americans and super evil Jews from the region which would then be ruled in peace and freedom forever by the beneficent and peaceloving Ayatollahs of peace.

I don't have a problem with this

Why? Because if someone comes after me to sue for illegal content I will turn around and sue the ISP and YouTube for delivering it to me. Viacom wants to use threats of force against Google's customer's to police Google for them. I say go direct to the source.

I wonder if he would have liked a Synclavier?

We know he did not like a Moog. But Moogs back then were not a keyboardists keyboard. In terms of tone and timbre now though you can make an electronically enhanced piano or better yet, a Synclavier do pretty much whatever you want it to.

But both of those guys on Fox are still child molesters.

So they've got that going for them.

Thursday, July 3, 2008 01:54 PM

Well it's a bit of both really

In Italy they scaled back the national pension system more than 2 years ago and created quite a panic as people who had worked their whole lives were now told to expect pension benefits cuts as deep as 30%. Needless to say they did not embrace their inner hippy and declare that a good thing for the sake of that whole 'less is more' ethos so popular here.

The problem really is that ramping up a labor pool takes time and even were they to fling open the doors today and tell 500 million Asians, Africans and Arabs to come in and work, in Europe there's a big gap in how to fund retirees in the next 10-15 years. Now, one could adopt the Salon Uber Alles approach and just tell those senior citizens to fuck themselves and die for the greater good but then you'd at least have to pretend to listen to their concerns before blowing them off.

Life is hard, get a helmet

No one here remembers 2001, 1999, 1994, 1987, 1981, 1980, 1974. Those were all pretty bad years too. Better to take steps than to pound your keyboards furiously. Or not.

In the Obamaverse people don't need jobs

They simply bask in rainbows and sunshine, like plants.

Thursday, July 3, 2008 08:26 AM

You mean all the troops in Korea and Okinawa and Germany are that crucial?

Somehow I don't think we really need 40,000 troops in Japan, 30,000 in Korea and 60,000 in Germany. I'm guessing we could spare a few of them.
