Original article: Stop the noise!

I kind of don't believe it

For one thing, since the 1980's in NYC the law for noise had been that car alarms if, unattended and blaring for more than 10 minutes can in fact be disabled by any means necessary w/o 'undue' damage to the property. Similarly the rule for a building alarm is 15 minutes, perhaps as much as 30.

In 1983 I had an off duty NYC cop park under my coop window. His alarm went off. For 17 hrs. About 5 or 6 months later a similar thing happened again. We had already checked and my neighbor, an electricians apprentice grabbed some aviation shears and we went downstairs got under the car and started cutting wires until the alarm cut out. We TOLD the cops what we were going to do and they said "OK".

A year or two later the piano store on the corner of Northern Blvd and 149th St. was vandalized. Someone threw a trashcan through a large plate window. The alarm went off and rang for an hour or two. The cops tried to contact the owner but couldn't. We called them back and they said and I quote "We think that's an EPA reg and if you want to knock the bell off the building with a hammer we don't think there's a law against that." unquote. So we did. No one ever came after us.

No - the difference is between a GROUP and the totality of each individual case. 80-90% of all healthcare dollars in one's lifetime are spent in the last 12 months of life. But as a GROUP the largest consumers are women of childbearing age. It's axiomatic, they have kids they cost more.

Susan don't laugh

If you told Salon readers that antimatter was the fuel of the future they'd scream in 50 different columns for its immediate implementation even if it took a century and ever dollar in America to get there. Because that's a practical alternative to nasty nasty oil.

No one lifts a finger for the millions dead in Congo

Or the genocide du jour in Darfur. So one's going to do anything about Zimbabwe. And, if you think about it, why? After all it's not all that remarkably different from dozens of lesser known African nations and it's only distinguishing differences are a) western liberals used to love that whole revolutionary Marxist kill whitey patina and b) it used to be not such an awful place, relatively speaking. Now it's interchangeable with any number of African Abattoir Kingdoms. Oh well I'm sure violent Soviet style fervor will fix it.

In Raleigh, the CAT bus system is cutting back

Even witha 14% increase in ridership, the system doesn't operate at a profit. It never has. So with the increased price of gas, the city wants to cut back service. Oh well.

Original article: The way of the samurai

Samurai were effectively marginalized by the late 16th century

They served no useful purpose other than posing and talking to each other about poetry and such.

Then I would ask you to send your checks to the city of Raleigh, because we don't actually have the money to do it.

Take your points up with him. No matter how many time they raise our property taxes (twice this year alone) they still seem to need to blow millions of dollars on god knows what, including hiring 70 more cops just to maintain 2007 staffing levels. Mass transit is pretty close to the bottom of the list for where monies get spent.

That might be the most retarded thing I've heard.

Let's send all the Mexicans to Canada, Australia, Brazil, Russia and Mongolia where's it only 'fair' that someone consumes their land to a more appropriate Western European density.

BTW what exactly IS the population density of Mexico? By my math and the CIA Factbook's #'s it's about 150/sq mile or 58/sqkm. That means the French and Germans should immediately crush into sparsely populated Mexico.

Is it better or worse

That in today's world, no one. NO ONE. would stand up to Congress? In 2008 there would never be a black list because there would be no need. Those who could leave the US and maintain their careers would, everyone else would cave and do a gameshow.

An overpaid ex sportscaster

Does any of this shock anyone? Look, Glenn is a closet far right libertarian. Now he has an excuse to vote for Bob Barr.

Just wait till gas is $9/gal

You'll need cops and national guardsmen at every gas station. But lo and behold, we have more guns than they do. Thanks, Justice Scalia, I think I WILL treat myself to some free fuel.

PS, OPEC President said today he expects oil to go to $170/bbl soon.

Now that the writers went on strike

And today SAG announced it will probably go on strike too, I have to say that Hollywood has painted its own hagiography about how tragic and noble they are, and were. But maybe it's bullshit. Maybe a few dozen or a few hundred formerly highly paid writers, directors and hacks really aren't that important once you realize that you're talking about people who made movies and TV. It's not like they were Jonas Salk you know.
