that depends on which problem you want to solve

Giving everyone no matter how poor, access to free or low cost health care.

Giving people who nominally can afford it access to affordable and quality health care.

Two different problems. Even with 'coverage' most households get lousy overpriced undercoverage that at best covers a portion of the overall cost.

Now I can appreciate the weeping Salon readers who insist that the poorest of the poor get 'fixed' first. Because that lets them sleep at night. But for the vast majority of the middle class the problem has to do with themselves. And I doubt helping out the middle class is very high on the activists list.

Poor people will still have the care of last recourse, the ER. But if 'program' here is to ignore the middle class then they won't get a lot of support outside of their own elitist circles.

You all those Black Guys in prison?

How does the FBI plan on determining who precisely is Muslim. Half the House of Lords in England are Muslim converts. I bet they would stand out like a beacon? No? What about you Dr. Cole? Do you LOOK Muslim?

Give me more than $10 for it.

Sprint has or had a 'recycling' program where they would send you a box and could mail in your old phone for a $10 credit. Maybe if they gave more than 5% of the value of the phone based on what they charged ME, I'd be more eager to send them an old phone. Especially since you have to wait about 6 months for the check. If I could give it Good Will for a writeoff I would but they won't take it.

That sounds like an excuse

Societal progress isn't random. And someone's lack of progress isn't random either. That's a cop out. For example there's a good reason that in some (Arab) cultures which don't promote education, literacy or personal freedom that they more or less stopped dead and failed to enjoy and exploit the Renaissance, the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution.

If what you're getting at is yet another oblique attack on the White Man's Colonialism as the be all and end all then you are wrong. It is US who conquered THEM. It wasn't an accident.

Original article: Grandma gets off

Why bother?

I'm sure the manual of female sexuality gains 10,000 pages per decade of life. By senior citizenhood there's just too much homework. You've been scolding correcting and nagging for 5 decades, why don't you just give it rest already.

So in other words

Let women be women and force men to be androgynes. What's in it for me?

It's not rocket surgery.

Of course questioning the 'loyalty' of Jews is dogma around here.

None the less still it's a little hard to profile people based on a belief system. I know an Eliot Rosenberg who's a third generation Baptist. I guess you're supposed to 'declare' what faith you are like in all those progressive Arab and Farsi states.

Aren't you worried you'll offend the Muslims?

This IS Salon, isn't it?

My bad,

So do you look B'hai? How's that random oppression of B'hai leaders in Iran working out? You're practically Jews over there vis a vis being arrested, executed and persecuted. I hope they manage to come to their safe haven in Haifa eventually. You know, the evil zionist city of Haifa in Bloodsuckistan where B'hai is based.

Anyway point being, when this story was in /. two days ago it's clear this is smoke and noise with no substance. They will wind up arresting more Sikhs and Hindus than anyone else because the FBI, DHS and TSA are all morons. All you're doing Dr. Cole is spreading the same kind of fearmongering nonsense that the government does.

Mark LeVine is an historian not a culture critic

He's out of his depth with this.

Well maybe but not if I have to drive far to find it.

GCF and Goodwill, Veterans of America etc are all around here. If I have to go to the next county I'm not doing it. It will just sit in the drawer forever.

Wehbe is Coptic Christian isn't she? Well her mom is at any rate

She publically congratulated Nasrallah of Hezbollah. Huzzah Huzzah. Which is pretty funny when you remember that the nutters in Hezbollah would be the first ones to clap a chador on her and stuff her in the back room with the rest of the cattle.

They should shitcan the column

It has no place in this land of half assed far left punditry and navel gazing. Unless you find someone who can write about solar powered wind powered cell phone rechargers that promote the candidacy of Obama and/or any other anti capitalist Marxist-lite shill.

Original article: Make less! Save more!

WTF is 'retirement'?

That is over. If you are in your late 40's early 50's you will be faced with 4 alternatives:

Outlive your money

Outlive your healthcare

Die early

Keep working

I don't plan to ever be able to afford to 'retire' and will probably drop in the harness. The old ladies in Florida who still have living husbands call this 'The Blessing'. Let's face facts ladies, 27 is the new 18 which means you will probably be mothering, parenting, supporting your own children until they are nearly 30. By then you're probably about 56-58. So then what? Crash program to save some dollars for 10 years so you can eat Alpo for another 20 years?

I'd rather go to K-Mart buy a gun and shoot myself right there. Maybe I will. Fuck it.

Thursday, July 10, 2008 08:30 AM

Oh well

Look, practically speaking most of the countries in the world routinely spy on their citizens with no legal restraint at all. You're always saying we're the worst of the worst. So there you have it.

Half of you would stick your arm in a furnace

If Obama told you to. The other half would fall over yourselves explaining why someone else sticking their arm in the furnace is a good and noble thing. All of you would tear yourselves apart justifying the request to stick all your arms in. That is what a Cult of Personality is about. Guess what? You were all going to get spied on no matter what. There is no nobility there is only politics and power. Now go blog about something.
