Hurrah!
[Read the article: Salon's new letters registration policy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Here's to the good spirits at Salon who've put up with a lot of [are swear words still allowed?].
I vote in favor of the anonymous option.
I can't post the link here (not that I'm complaining), but NewYorkTimes.com has just posted a fun op ed cartoon called "Diagram of a blog" that will probably be familiar to a lot of readers.
p.s. in preview mode paragraph breaks aren't working...

Here's raising a glass to you, Joan!
[Read the article: Michelle Malkin plays the victim card]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]You do a great job balancing critical, independent thinking (aka open-mindedness) with matters of civility and basic human dignity. I've been impressed with the non-defensive way you "shrug off" most of the criticisms you receive. It's nice that you're human. You listen. You care. You've been great.

Who's Afraid of Camille Paglia??
[Read the article: Real inconvenient truths]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]This wasn't my favorite of Paglia reads, but I love that this woman is out there, and I'm glad she's back with Salon. So she challenges a few precious liberal tenets, she's far from a "righty," and I for one appreciate her expression of alternative view points a lot!

Camille & Simon
[Read the article: Real inconvenient truths]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]God. You'd think most of us liberals didn't have a sense of humor or irony or inquisitiveness by reading many of these letters.
People who support Salon's decision to run Paglia are lame brained just for that reason? Since when did so many liberals become so closed off to difference--to genuine liberal thinking? Or having any fun? (I can't believe people are complaining about Salon wasting "real estate" to publish an article on American Idol. What is real estate on the net anyway?) Are liberals really becoming a bunch of dried up raisins as we contemplate how awful the world is? Not that things aren't awful, but are we really all totally depressed?
It strikes me that Camille Paglia in her academic/popular culture arena can be compared to Simon Cowell in the American Idol arena. Both pass judgment with arrogant, smart voices. Both are people we hate to love and love to hate. Both add analytical commentary that audiences soak up whether they like that they're doing it or not.

Joining in the celebration
[Read the article: Salon wins Webby award]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I don't pay the premium subscription fee any longer, as I find the put-up-with advertising option to be just fine, but in case it counts to someone out there, I used to be a paying subscriber, and I've been a big fan of Salon since the mid 90's. It was the mix that attracted me and the mix that keeps me coming back. I'm a proud liberal, but I second the poster who suggested a Libertarian column. My liberal values are all about being open-minded and supporting the ACLU as well as liberal social policies. Group think--the idea of a one-party country--even if it's mine--that SCARES me!

Thumbs Up!
[Read the article: "Waitress"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]My husband and I just saw this film last night. We both enjoyed it very, very much. I find myself disagreeing with Stephanie Zacharek's review that it's uneven because it's a little too sweet at the get go. Ultimately--that is, by the end--its romantic genre might be a bit too sweet for some, but the sweetness at the beginning of the film is funny and clearly stylized. Anyway, we laughed through the whole film...and cried and groaned... What a gem!

"Persistent anonymity" sounds great to me
[Read the article: Who are you, Anonymous?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I appreciate the letters of THOUGHTFUL readers very much, and I enjoy making my own contributions every now and then. I'm a teacher, and I often desire to keep my personal opinions anonymous, so I sometimes choose to post anonymously. But I REALLY appreciate the responses to this blog of others who are sensitive to the dysfunctional communication dynamic that can result when it feels like you don't have a handle on who your audience is. Call me Cowardly Anonymous #101 and I'll happily retain that identity throughout the thread.

Open invitation to right wing Salon visitors
[Read the article: Moving beyond Obama and race]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Texan and MiltonJr,
What brings you here? It would be great to hear your thoughtful conservative views, not just reactions to what you're told.
Here are some specific questions: Do you believe that conservative talking heads are right in their insinuations that Wright's rhetoric is a threat to democracy? If so, why? Do you think that Black America is more angry than White, Red or Blue America? If so, why? And then, can you tell us if you don't ever hear "Damn liberal America" when you listen to Limbaugh's rants?
Your rational, thoughtful contributions to the dialogue could be of interest while you're visiting here.
