Democracy or Liberation?

I wonder if Glenn Greenwald would care to investigate the following:

I never heard the president use the term "democracy" (or any variation of it) in any speech before the invasion of Iraq. He always said "liberation".

It was only after the Chalabi president-for-life scenario didn't pan out that he started using "democracy".

If I am correct, then remembering this fact would discount the notion, repeated by the left as well as the right, that we went in to start democraticizing the Middle East.

Impersonating Reporters

Glenn,

why assume that these reporters "fell" for the story their government "sources" fed them? Maybe they themselves were the source of concocting or embellishing the stories? Maybe the silence is not because the media is protecting government sources, but that the government is protecting media sources. At least, maybe we should consider the possibility that they were collaborating on stories- a joint effort, so to speak?

These reporters and editors are not dumb. Maybe this was no mistake after all. It's hard to continue to believe that they were so thoroughly bamboozled and for so long, especially since they offer no apologies.

These news organizations are not the old grass roots press. They are parts of large conglomerates who have agendas. Maybe they were doing more than just reporting, more than reporting sympatheticly. maybe they were actively and knowinhly advocating the case while impersonating reporters?

ebola vs. cheney

-- e_five says:

"The Ebola virus has a higher approval rating than Dick Cheney."

Because it causes fewer deaths every year than cheney.

elephantman and PBS

The problem with rightwing pundits is that they lie. And they shill. They validate failure. They have no integrity. And they have no shame.

PBS does not have a leftwing bias. It might have a bias against fraud, unsubstantiated allegations, anti-intellectualism, or propaganda. That's why we watch it.

Bill Moyers may be liberal, but he can follow a straight line, he can provide sources and back up his facts. Most importantly, he keeps an eye on the powerful on my behalf. You know, journalism. He doesn't get his audience by shouting others down.

Do you expect to put Rush Limbaugh or Bill O'Reilly on public broadcasting and have anyone with any intellect swallow that garbage? We'll just go somewhere else.

Any rightwing pundit with any integrity (and I'm sure they are out there) wouldn't be caught dead defending these Republicans in a civilized forum with a straight face.

That's it! I'm done with MSM

I watched Moyers report and read Glenn's analysis. Then I turned to Washington Post op-ed. Broder, who has been criticized soundly in recent weeks for shooting off his mouth, is going after Harry Reid today! What he is saying now is this: "screw you! It's business as usual, as far as I'm concerned".

Why do these people still have jobs?

I'm done with MSM. And, if this hoax continues to continue, even as more and more shameful details are unfolding daily, I'm afraid MSM, as we know it, is itself done.

But, there is a silver lining in all of this. There are still enough good people left to right this ship. I'm hopeful, and I'll lend my support anyway I can. I'd be glad if this leads to house cleaning and re-learning, after which a different Fourth State might emerge.

There's a run on Washington Post!!!

Broder has received 36 pages of responses to his Op-Ed piece today trashing Harry Reid. Nearly all ridiculing him, most calling for his retirement.

I guess it's so BAD, one of the editors, Warren Bass, has quietly sent out an SOS e-mail asking "people around town and in the political/military/media/diplomatic community to tell us what they think." about Broder's column. SEND HELP!!!

One of my favorites:

"Are we watching the same country? Anybody know where I can get some intelligent analysis? preferably related to the creek we are up NOW?"

Beautiful Post on WaPO RE: Broder

More on the avalanche of comments to Broders column today.

I'm not a praying man, but I could agree with this post:

"There are certain things that make me believe in God. Take WWII for example. How many times did Hitler make exactly the wrong decision? Delaying the start of Barbarossa to help the Italians pacify Greece. Delaying ME-262 production to make it a ground attack plane. Not depl0ying Panzers quickly to Normandy because he thought the real invasion was coming at Calais. Its almost as if divine providence was at work, as if God was saying no, Adolph, youre not going to take control. Today, the same sort of thing seems to be happening. Consider the rise of the internet at the exact moment that mainstream media became nothing but a propaganda tool for the GOP. Just imagine if the tripe that Mr. Broder et al spew on a daily basis were our only sources of information? Sorry, Mr. Broder, but were not falling for it anymore. To quote something I read recently: 1984 was a cautionary tale. It was not an instruction manual. We simply dont believe the lies anymore. See, we have other sources of information. Thank you, God.
