  • On Reading Cow Pile Soup

[Read the article: David Broder: Embodiment of Beltway values]

    ME: What the f*ck?

    MYCUPOFCOFFEE: I don't get it.

TOBYTHECAT: Scroll back up. We must be on the wrong thread.

ME: (scrolling up) No. This is Glenn's place.

MYCUPOFCOFFEE: Take another drink of me and read it again. Maybe you're still too sleepy to understand Cow Pile's sophisticated satirical style.

TOBYTHECAT: This isn't satire. Mr. Cow Pile is simply using fictional children to express his own views in a rather transparent attempt to lend those views a degree of innocence and sympathy. It's shameful, really.

MYCUPOFCOFFEE: Yeah what's next, talking inanimate objects?

ME: (to MYCUPOFCOFFEE) Hey, wipe your lip. You've got foam on it.

MYCUPOFCOFFEE: I was going to say the same thing to you.

ME, MYCUPOFCOFFEE and TOBYTHECAT: (en masse) Ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!

ME: Mister Stumblebum is supposed to be the teacher and yet he doesn't capitalize "iranians". And listen to this phrasing "...on the march to seize 19th provinces...".

MYCUPOFCOFFEE: And the students are fully propogandized. Check this out: "LIZZIE: "So you're saying that my mommy will be responsible for the deaths of all those blue fingered people if our soldiers leave soon?"

TOBYTHECAT: Christ. If I were that heavy-handed I wouldn't even be able to wash my own whiskers.

We on the left always seem to assign the GOP an evil genius quotient that's more reflective of our fears than their capabilities. It's understandable but sometimes the imbalances of something, no matter how powerful it once was, end its' effectiveness. It happens in politics just as it does in the financial markets. And any Iran Solution rather than solving the right's problem would most likely send them headlong over a cliff in tandem with the economy.

But I think your idea that the GOP might "successfully reassert themselves at the end of an Obama first term" is probably correct. Although that process is sure to begin in Jan 2009 and continue building steam throughout.

As Digby and others including, I think, some commenters on UT have said, our pathetic MSM is going to magically become concerned with being a watchdog press again (as much as they have the ability for, anyway) as soon as Obama is sworn in. But I'm not so sure that Obama can't offset that through strong accomplishment. I don't believe a dissappointed left is a foregone conclusion.

MoA makes a valid point about the media's (fake) maverick portrayal of McCain as a problem for him. That is one of the imbalances which make this election so problematic for the GOP. As we know all too well around here (thanks to Glenn and his GAH, as well as others) the GOP relies to an overwhelming degree on the media manipulating the character narratives to their advantage. It's no small impediment that in this election cycle, every time the MSM reiterate McCain's (fake) maverick status, it sends a shudder down the spine of the conservative base. McCain's base (the MSM) is actually working against him. The right-wing voting bloc needs someone who will reinforce their tribal conformities, not stand as a "maverick".

There are many forces that interact and create our political climate and certainly desperation to hold onto power is one of them, but personally I don't put much stock in the idea that there are any rabbits that can be pulled out of the GOP's tattered hat.

There's no way around the fact that the destructive force of this administration has been real and extreme and unprecedented. So I didn't mean to suggest that it's paranoid to see them as bogeymen - they are bogeymen. But even evil has to have the aid of other forces, and it's not hard to see that the perfect storm they've benefitted from is dissipating and I think any grand last minute stunt or desperate hail-satan pass, has more chance of failing monumentaly than in succeeding.

Regarding Brad's if we knew the whole of it: I believe we will and in the not very distant future. And it might actually be better that it doesn't come out for a few more years when, I hope, there is some new blood in our media or we have forced some change in their operating system so that all of those bombshells aren't reduced to muffled farts as were all of the staggering abuses you listed in your comment.

  • Shooter what are you pretending your citation means?

[Read the article: Comcast censors criticisms of itself and Rep. Carney]

Here are the 2nd-4th graphs of Shooter's article.

The ad, part of the denomination's new, broad identity campaign set to begin airing nationwide on Dec. 1, states that -- like Jesus -- the United Church of Christ (UCC) seeks to welcome all people, regardless of ability, age, race, economic circumstance or sexual orientation.

According to a written explanation from CBS, the United Church of Christ is being denied network access because its ad implies acceptance of gay and lesbian couples -- among other minority constituencies -- and is, therefore, too "controversial."

"Because this commercial touches on the exclusion of gay couples and other minority groups by other individuals and organizations," reads an explanation from CBS, "and the fact the Executive Branch has recently proposed a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, this spot is unacceptable for broadcast on the [CBS and UPN] networks."

So this was a case of the corporate media capitulating to your brethren, the religious right hypocrites, and bending to the pressures of the powerful. It's still reflects the corruption of media conglomeration and you damn well know it you smug phony bastard.

And it's hardly a stretch to imagine Glenn taking on that case. Heh.

  • Heads up

[Read the article: NYT circulates fear-mongering claims on FISA debate]

Jonathan Turley was just on Olbermann talking about the Kucinich impeachment resolution. If you can, catch the replay (7:00 on the west coast) or perhaps they'll have it on Crooks & Liars tomorrow. It's worth watching.

    Hey Jebbie

I was so roused by the Turley spot that I actually did start pounding my dick on the table. I stopped short of sticking it in a fire, although I could have easily started one with all that firewood I suddenly had.
