  • Target: truth

    Glenn,

Your comments that this is not a case of obsessing about Joe Klein make this a very important situation. In pushing back against Klein while highlighting the lies and distortion in what he says and then taking it further to dissect the editorial supervision that allowed this malpractice into print, you are setting a template for action for those of us who are fed up with the pervasiveness of right wing talking points being regurgitated from erstwhile liberals.

The strategy is elegant and simple. Target the truth and don't ever give in. Calmly and devastatingly repeat the truth and point out the lies. Question the authority system that allows the lies and distortions to be published.

How this plays out for the next steps will shed light on whether significant progress can be made in exposing the corruption that has crept into the media. If a significant "correction" can be forced into the print edition, or if any other media exposure results from the documentation of Klein's lies, and especially if Pelosi or another significant political figure takes up the issue of Klein's lies, then the process of lifting the curtain behind which the right wing has been operating may well be entering a new phase. That this would occur as we enter the 2008 election cycle would be of utmost importance.

Keep at it, Glenn. Your patriotism is showing. Truth is definitely the dark horse candidate in this election cycle.

  • OT-Our favorite butcher of the English language strikes again

Just as Klein's mendacity now is the standard for "journalism", our buddy Boylan's craftsmanship with the keyboard is the standard for "spokesman":

That is the ultimate stated end goal that this is to move to.

I still Google him every few days to see if he continues to work his magic with the language.

My Christmas list is short: Klein and Boylan joining in early retirement.

  • My letter to Stengel

[Read the article: Demand answers from Time magazine]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Dear Mr. Stengel,

The standard response which you are sending out today to those who have complained about the propaganda in Joe Klein's column about the "tone-deaf" Democrats falls far short of the actions of a responsible journalist. First, all of Mr. Klein's attempts at explanation on his blog resulted in exacerbating the problem. Further, stating that "TIME will run a correction in his column in this week's issue of the magazine" also falls far short if there is no effort to publish the correction now on the internet and to append the correction to the posting of the original column.

Rather that allowing Mr. Klein to write a column in the next, or any future issue of Time, I would suggest instead that you run the excellent column by Representative Rush Holt, one of the authors of the RESTORE Act, which now can be found on Huffington Post. This would be a much better use of your space.

I have never been a subscriber to Time. I would consider purchasing a subscription, however, should you choose to fire Mr. Klein and Ms. Painton (prior to her planned voluntary exit) and instead publish in that slot a random rotation of columns from authors such as Glenn Greenwald, Jane Hamsher, Josh Marshall, Christy Hardin Smith or other rising stars of the liberal blogospere. Should you decide to publish these folks, you will find far fewer headaches of the type brought on by Mr. Klein, since they all base their writing on actual research, checking of sources, checking of facts and a real zeal for truth. You might recognize these as the standard operating procedures of something called journalism. I encourage you to try it, as it would be a welcome change from your current propaganda operation. You just might be surprised by how well your magazine would sell if it started to seek out and publish the truth.

    Sincerely,

  • So, I take it...

the interview with Klein or Stengel is off?

Great work Glenn! Keep fighting. Keep asking them if they plan to address all of the additional "errors" and the lies they have spread while trying to respond.

  • Recap

The once famous pundit named Klein
When Greenwalded got huffy and whined:
"I'm writing, not reading. I'm busy!"
"That's perfect!" and "Nailed it!", said Prissy.
But Holt said there's no truth in TIME.

I'll be occupied most of the day. Keep the war drums, banging, Glenn, and watch your back. You have something real here and need to keep pushing.

  • Where are the Democrats?

In light of such overpowering evidence of false premises for the Iran war-mongers, why are the Democratic presidential candidates silent on this? When will even one candidate have the spine to stand up and say "These people are wrong, they were wrong on Iraq and they are wrong on Iran"? It seems that this could become the largest club for beating the Republicans over the head on how disastrous their foreign policy has been. Why the silence?

Dang. How could we all have missed it so badly? Here's how those guys buy Joe's comments. I was doing a search on Yahoo News on "Joe Klein" and FISA (nope, no additional M$M coverage beyond E&P, Wired and Chicago Tribune that I can find) and there it was in a "sponsored ad" on the right:

    Joe Klein

If we want to buy some joe klein, all we have to do is shop at smarter.com. We really should have known that it is this easy.

On another front, I did Joe the favor of posting the Russ Feingold letter on the NPod thread at Swampland, since it was clear that Joe had lost his copy in all of the goings-on.
