Original article: Should cafes be kid-free?

Kids are people too....

I have three girls, twins ages 5 and an older girl who is 11. Are they always perfect little ladies in public - of course not. But at the same time they know I would never let them run around a coffee shop, hide under tables and do other hideous things, or the punishment would be swift and severe. Not through hitting, but through shame. I find that shame and guilt are the best way to control my children, and it works. I also find that once I have to do it for something, it rarely happens again. Sometimes all the self-esteem we give our kids needs to be tempered with a little reality. That's why I'm never afraid to take them anywhere that adults are, because I know that they will behave because they don't want to let me down. These are three of the most happy and well-adjusted kids I know, and they enjoy life. Use a little guilt and shame, and see if that helps, I think kids will be better off for it.

Fit to command

I wouldn't make military service mandatory to run for president, I would make it mandatory for everyone. Two years, and part of the requirement would be overseas service, and at some point assist in humanitarian aid. We have a responsibility to help others less fortunate than ourselves, it's the Christian thing to do. I served in the National Guard for 7 years, so while I was not a full-timer, I feel I did my time. Two years of full-time service, right after high-school, may make our children more mature when they enter college and perhaps less likely to do so much of the stupid things they do. My guess is that also many of them would be a little more suspiciousof the flag-wavers who've never served but are ready to send other people's children to war. Now that everyone's children could go to war, maybe we'd think twice about doing it.

Original article: Going mobile

If Jobs really wanted to change things....

He would have made the iPhone a reasonable price, say $199 for the 4GB and no mor ethant $299 for the 8GB. It would have been unlocked so that you could use it with any carrier, as is done in Europe. Everyone would have bought one, and at the same time thumbed their noses at the mobile carriers. Until he's willing or able to change the economic structure of the business, instead of just the technology, it's just another fancy phone I would want but can't afford.

Peyton Manning in Heaven

Peyton Manning in Heaven

Peyton Manning, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven, God was showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded Colts flag in the window. "This house is yours for eternity, Peyton," said God. "This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here." Peyton felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house.

On his way up the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner. It was a 3-story mansion with a Silver and blue sidewalk, a 50-foot tall flagpole with an enormous Patriots logo flag, and in every window, a New England Patriots towel. Peyton looked at God and

said "God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question. I was an all-pro QB, I hold many NFL records, and I even went to the Hall of Fame."

God said "So what's your point, Peyton?" "Well, why does Tom Brady get >a better house than me?"

God chuckled, and said: "Peyton, that's not Tom's house, it's mine."

I'm an atheist but I love that story.

The article is right - at least in my case...

I remember when they had a sale at Home Depot for the new bulbs, I was really happy to get them and bring them home and start to save energy. It all went downhill from there - my wife didn't like the curly shape they have, you can see them through the light fixtures. Then, she didn't like the light they make, it was differen than regular bulbs. Finally, and I don't know if this is just the bulbs I got, but they make a barely perceptable humming noise. The funny thing is I have poor hearing and my wife can hear someone cough 3 houses away. So end of the story is that we only use those bulbs in the storage room, my office, outside, etc. Everywhere else we kept the regular bulbs - untill they come out with something better my wife won't budge.

If President Bush really wanted a historic legacy...

He would make it the priority of the rest of his administration to eliminate the electoral college (besides getting us out of Iraq). Who better than the man who is President today because of the Electoral College? It would make America truly democratic, and at the same time be a hidden admission that he should never have been in office in the first place. I only wish he had the cojones to do it.

Apple = Harley Davidson, PCs = Japanese Clones

Farhad's argument has similarities to another market - motorcycles. If you look at a Harley Davidson Road King, a mid-to-top level motorcycle in their product offerings, it's about $18,000. If you look at the Yamaha Stratoliner S, a motorcycle in every mechanical way superior to the Road Star, it costs $16,500, a full $1,500 less. Yet you will see Harley fans line up to pay over the sticker price to get their Harley, not because of the product's superiority or quality over it's Japanese rival, but rather to feel part of the Harley community, the brotherhood, etc. It's exactly the same with Apple computers. On a side note, I've been stuck at work using a brand new Apple computer while my PC being serviced (it fell on the floor, what can you do) and I feel like I'm working with big heavy mittens on - I honestly don't see the big deal - I can't wait to get my PC back.
