Re: Obama admin won't sign land mine ban
Peace Prize can't sign the ban because he has to keep the peace with Accudyne and Alliant TechSystems, the largest land mine contractors in the U.S.
Why we still have the death penalty in this country is another issue entirely.
National health insurance, abolishing the death penalty - it would be nice if this country could join the civilized world sometime soon.
Chris Harman has died. :( The revolutionary socialist and leading theoretician of the International Socialist tradition, died following a cardiac arrest in Cairo last night. Mr. Harman was the editor of the International Socialism journal and had written an accessible critique of mainstream economic theory, "Zombie Capitalism." His other works include "Explaining the Crisis," on the recent economic meltdown, and "Economics of the Madhouse," plus innumerable articles for International Socialism, which included sophisticated polemics against theorists such as Ernest Mandel and Alec Nove. His historical work culminated in "A People's History of the World."
is like a safe haven. :(
The racists and pro-war hatemongers are out in force.
School shootings in the past have put a focus on gun laws. Perhaps this will begin questions about how things look in the military.
Given that the military is the cornerstone of capitalist empire, though, I won't hold my breath.
I'm finding the fawning over this Representative Grayson guy pretty sickening. Ob's apologists did the same thing, expecting a "different outcome," even though Obfuck's political leanings as a neoliberal hawk and Senate votes told you all you needed to know about him.
What's Grayson's political record like? In some ways, like Ob, this guy appeared out of nowhere, in Grayson's case because of a few choice comments like "Republicans want you to die." Is that all you've got on the guy?
Honestly, Democrats seem like those needy women who buy the latest self-help book expecting it to be the magical solution to their problems. Never mind that she's got bookshelves bending under the weight of decades of other "self-help" books. It's like the obese guy who buys the latest diet book expecting the latest and greatest to be his body habitus salvation. Never mind that he's got boxes of diet books from the last 20 years stashed in his garage next to the unused treadmill and Stairstepper.
How about a little critical thinking, instead of "let's all give Grayson the love because he made one quip in the media?"
Or how about stopping the insanity altogether by not voting for corporate backed candidates? By definition, doesn't that mean the public's interests won't get served?
It is not a "noble" intention to stop communism. It's typical interventionism on behalf of corporate power and wealthy elites to maintain the status quo of capitalism and exploitation.
on the elitist arm of the conservative/Republican party that Obama is on their side on policy so far. These Republicans have more in common with the Democratic Congress than they do with the ragtag raggedy ass working class morans that are picketing these town halls.
Any "class war" in this country is going to come down between the fascist-loving religious right wing and the progressive/working class/"liberal" side of the equation. It's pretty instructive that the elites have managed to message effectively to prevent these 2 groups from coming together and fighting VERTICALLY against the ruling class and people in power. Instead, the elite class stokes the fires so that these 2 groups are fighting LATERALLY against each other.
It's shrewd for the ruling class to keep them apart. It's too bad, because what these two groups have in common is their economic interests, and if working people of all religious, ethnic, and political stripes came together, it would blow the entire capital structure sky-high.
That would be your "change you can believe in."
I don't understand all of the attention being given to the antics of the wingers. As everybody "looks over there," Congress and Obama are planning to undermine any health care "reform" bill that gets passed so that we will end up with something that is either dead on arrival or worse than what we have now.
Start focusing on the "dumb and dumber" who make the policy and have the most to benefit from not giving us health care - Obfraud and the Congress.
Huffpo has a piece up verifying the backroom WH deals that went on with Pharma - so it looks like that backpedaling the White House did was to save face.
Nobody in D.C. in power wants working class people, the poor, the uninsured, the disabled, or anybody to have decent health insurance that doesn't cost an arm and a leg (sometimes literally!). Obama is doing more damage than Palin ever could.
The views of the majority of Americans are held by parties like the Socialist, Peace & Freedom, Socialism/Liberation, Workers, and Communist parties. Nader's a capitalist, but he has the right idea. It's just that nobody is educated about voting in their own best interests and the MSM demonizes any position that is not pro-corporate fascist state.
It's hard to feel sorry for the people who voted for Obama. They had to have known what they were getting.
With the murder of the gay servicemember at Pendleton and the Obfuck administration turning a blind eye to it, we now know Obfuck is beholden not only to the corporatists but to the fundie Xtians as well. I can't believe we still have 3 1/2 years left of this hate-filled corrupt president.
[Obama] earned each and every one of [his electoral votes] by out working, out smarting, and out campaigning his opponent.
He lied to get those votes.
And he's still lying.
....but does anyone here think the CIA acted without Obama's knowledge in orchestrating and carrying out the Zelaya coup?
