Revealing
[Read the article: On armies, war and an aging Israel]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]As reported by BBC, Palestinians are having their Day of Mourning as they consider what they see as the catastrophic founding of Israel. President Bush, in his usual tone deaf style, has made no mention of this painful time for Palestinians...if Bush had been smart, he would have acknowledged the Palestinians' resentments and sadness about losing their homes in 1948 and their continuing troubles with the Israelis, while also acknowledging Israel's right to celebrate its existence...the two don't have to be mutually exclusive.

Curious
[Read the article: Finding Obama guilty of insufficient devotion to Israel]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Goldberg's phrasing of questions about whether Zionism has justice looked as if it was a trap in which to catch Obama...I agree that Israel gets a free pass in America, at least among politicians...outside of Washington, Americans are less sympathetic, and tired of the endless to and fro between the Palestinians and Israelis that seem as intransigent as the troubles were once in Northern Ireland.
Obama walks a difficult line here...if he looks too sympathetic to Palestinians, and seems to get an endorsement from Hamas, he loses the support of most mainstream Jews in US. If he is too pro-Israel, his more radical base claim he is doing what Greenwald says is so bad for most US politicians.

Good point
[Read the article: Finding Obama guilty of insufficient devotion to Israel]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]vowing absolute allegiance
Has there ever been another country besides Israel to which American politicians are required to vow absolute allegiance?
Well, until relatively recently there was Ireland, but that was specific to Boston politicians.
-- bearpaw1
...and in NY...also in NY, the issue of Israel gets multiplied...the local news always reports when Jews are injured or killed in any Mideast conflict, but leave out any mention of what Palestinians are going through.

Why is this news?
[Read the article: Finding Obama guilty of insufficient devotion to Israel]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm not denying that there was a political necessity for Obama to do this - just marveling at the fact that, as extreme as it is -- almost debasing -- it's still not enough.
-- GlennGreenwald
Obama would not have the problem he has if it wasn't for his middle name: Hussein...call it prejudice, but Americans, especially many mainstream Jews who might vote for him, are squeamish about his allegiances...being a Christian doesn't necessarily make them comfortable with him either.
-
A Little Known fact
[Read the article: Finding Obama guilty of insufficient devotion to Israel]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Remember, one of the groups that put Bush over the top in Florida in 2000 was his Islamic supporters who were convinced that he would help them trash Israel, unlike that tool of the Jews; Clinton. Didn't work out so well, did it?
-- misaac
Yes, that is true...and Bush turned around and made them subjects of profiling and deported some also...in other words, Bush double crossed them. Didn't mind their votes, did he?

Cum grano sale
[Read the article: How will Barack Obama get to 270?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]One takes with a grain of salt anyone who worked for Bill Richardson (aka Judas) and Howard Dean (the mismanager of this Dem primary season)...your analysis sounds quaint...it would be great...if you did factor in so many voters who will NOT vote for Obama OR McCain, and that could be a deciding factor in many states...as well as a substantial number...

Surprise Surprise!
[Read the article: Karl Rove's sly deal with Fox]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]What did Claude Raines say in Casablanca about gambling going on at Rick's (Humprhrey Bogart's) Place?
I find it interesting that Terkel and Corley even express the slightest surprise about Fox and Karl being in bed with one another for McCain...not exactly breaking news.

Remarkable?
[Read the article: In Iowa, Obama reaches toward victory ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]A state that means nothing when it comes to deciding elections?
A BBC commentator put it right tonight...a sad night for Obama, because he just CAN'T put Hillary away...having a majority of delegates means absolutely diddley squat...Hillary won more votes, more delegates tonight, trouncing him again in a border state that DOES matter...
Again, BBC reporter noted: it was a "nothing" night for Obama...
Obama and his minions trot out the argument that the SDs shouldn't be deciding the election...well, guess who is? The party establishment coming out for him...
KY and WV have resoundingly said no to Obama, and no, not because they are all a bunch of racist crackers, as Obama supporters would have you believe...funny how they hate stereotypes yet engage in the most assinine ones to justify their own bigotry. David Gergen owes every voter in both KY and WV for saying on CNN that Hillary should renounce votes from people who said they wouldn't vote for him because of race...well, are votes by Obama going to be renounced because people said they wouldn't vote for her because she is a woman?
Reducing people to caricatures...ABSURD!!!

Oregon and working class
[Read the article: In Iowa, Obama reaches toward victory ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Oregon is 90% white, same as Kentucky. Income is lower than in Ohio, and it has a larger manufacturing base than Ohio or West Virginia. And tonight he won it in a landslide.
Obama doesn't have a problem with "working class white voters". Appalachia has a problem with Obama.
-- Uberbah
Nice try...Oregon is one of the most liberal states in the US...a west coast Massachusetts...to say that they would be voting not for Obama would be a shocker...the same was true in Wisconsin...fact is, Obama won't be winning in any of these states where a few thousand crazed supporters came out to intimidate and hoist their candidate on neighbors in ballots that were not secret...democracy NOT in action...

Sorry, No Can Do Obama!
[Read the article: She's in it to spin it]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]That's Hillary's plan...and she's sticking to it...maybe she's losing it, as some may say, but I think she is determined to stick it out, because if there is some October Surprise, she's stepping in...I can't blame her...Obama has NOT been battle tested...minor squirmishes that any candidate could have handled...I am not impressed by the punditry that say Obama's campaign has been brilliant.
