A cynic may well choose...
[Read the article: A surge of phony spin on Iraq]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]A cynic may well choose to believe what has been suggested by some that a cauldron of Iraqi social/political chaos/mayhem is being put in place deliberately by the Americans in order to pave a clear way to American long-term Iraq hegemony.
A cynic might refer to this as being the Israeli WestBank/Gaza strategy/policy picked up by the Americans for use in Iraq.
Recent days bring reports of very large numbers of weapons having gone missing or becoming "lost" in Iraq. Weapons the Americans brought into Iraq.
Now is that just ever so convenient for the Americans or what?
Surely al-Maliki is likely more of a politician than what passes for that breed in WashDC these days.He plainly is in the hot seat no matter what he does or does not. It is very doubtful G.W.Bush as Iraqi PM would have made it this far in Iraq under the conditions al-Maliki must swim in.
Clearly the Americans can/do keep al-Maliki from fully being an independent sovereign PM of Iraq. And any who believe the Americans are not setting or posturing al-Maliki's agenda or range of movement are likely very wrong.
A cynic might suppose it would serve the Bush/Cheney WH regime to see al-Maliki fail and indeed fall out of power. Clearing the way then for someone else who may prove more useful to American desires and intents in and for Iraq. A cynic could envisage such a turn of events taking place in Baghdads GZ.
A cynic might also not be surprized should the Americans put up a new "Iraqi strong man" to sort of pick up and carry on from where Saddam left off in Iraq.
Finally based on the Bush/Cheney regimes very sorry record since the first day of Shock and Awe in Iraq a cynic might well expect them to try to spin un-truths and non-facts ever so much more between now and Jan.2009 to escape any consequence(s) of or from what they did/did not do or have done/not done in and to Iraq.
A cynic would likely seldom or perhaps indeed never be proved wrong by the Bush/Cheney regime regarding Iraq.

In search of a heroic profile...
[Read the article: Will the real Colin Powell stand up?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Much has been said and written about what the Bush/Cheney regime did or did not do during 2002 to what led and became a set plan by Jan.2003 to invade Iraq to gain a grip on Iraqi oil,get rid of Saddam doing so and spin it all under a deceit ridden GWOT/OBL=Saddam/WMD/Looming Mushroom Clouds rubric.
The same game being played by the Americans now against Iran.
Clearly the neo-con/PNAC/corporatists were/are in control of most Bush WH major traffic control and intersections.
Truth, factual record and accurate historical reads and summary endpoints did not matter and in fact simply were not allowed to matter in 2002.
They matter little within the Bush/Cheney WH regime still now in 2007.
How many people in WashDC spread across the NSA,CIA,DOD and Department of State were available to deliver any number of truths, facts and accurate readings of Iraqi real world status during 2002? Or regarding any OBL/Saddam connections, purported Iraqi WMD presence or the wide range of real downside risks of invading Iraq? Were there perhaps 40 or 80 or 160? Did it matter? Based on what the Bush/Cheney regime did in March 2003 the answer is no. It did not matter.
Being on the side of truth, facts and more heedful thinking still does not matter with the Bush/Cheney regime or the legion of neo-cons,American militarists/authoritarians and MSM organs/pundits who have formed up within and behind this Bush/Cheney WH regime.
It remains doubtful whether Colin Powell can or will break with the GOP's "party first/nation second" ethos and say what he should and could have said back in 2002 now in 2007.
Profiles in courage, forthrightness of character and nobility of action not really found much in WashDC these days.
Plainly Iran now is being positioned by the Bush/Cheney regime in ways ever so similar to what befell Iraq.
Colin Powell can not undo what has befallen Iraq at the hands of the Americans but he still could perhaps halt or it could be hoped brake more Bush/Cheney regime craziness regarding any American attack on Iran.
If he will not do that then whatever he has to say or offer up about the Iraq Debacle really matters very little at this very late yet ever so jeopardy prone time in the reign of G.W.Bush.
