As a white-knuckled frequent flier, I consider good pilots heroes, not bus drivers. Knowing that experienced, rational, well-trained human beings are in the cockpit is all that separates me from lunacy when I'm at 30,000 feet.
As far as I'm concerned, pilots--like public school teachers--are under-appreciated!

About 20 years ago I wrote a series of articles about Lee Peterson, author of the book The Guide to the Wild Edibles of the Eastern United States. I followed him through the fields and wetlands of south Louisiana as he picked and gleaned, then went back to the cabin he was renting and created culinary delights from his harvest.
I was amused to discover that numerous weeds easily identified in my home lawn and garden were, in fact, edible. Soon, I began throwing some of them into salads and other dishes and when dinner guests would inquire about an unusual taste--oxalis leaves, for example, I learned to answer that they "came from my garden" and let it go at that.
If you know what you're doing, foraging is great fun and eating the forage is extremely satisfying!
