I've never posted a response to a Salon article before but after reading Traister's historically 'neutral' commentary and suddenly coming across this ridiculously fawning, insipid and misleading article, I have to say: Salon is starting to really lose all credibility. Caught up in Bay Area - Clinton-endorsement fever or something? I don't expect to see Walter Cronkite-level objective newsreporting but for Christ's sake why do we have to have out-and-out propaganda for Clinton? Come on.
Really nothing that hasn't already been said by other posters, just saying my peace, move along, nothing to see here...
If Hillary won New Mexico, it must mean that this is a caucus that "counts"! Hooray for New Mexico.
This is easily the most annoying bit of criticism of this speech. Does anyone really think that Obama would have included this part in the speech if he had not had many conversations already with his grandmother on this topic and that they had come to terms with it? Anybody consider that he more than likely informed/cleared with her this part of the speech before giving it? Did these thoughts even enter anyone's head? Why is there this assumption that his grandmother must be sitting in a nursing home in Hawaii in tears over this thing? Perhaps she's an adult and got over this long ago, which is the assumption one would logically make in a family as multiracial as Obama's, rather than "poor old grandma, now she's just a rhetorical tool in an Obama speech on race." I think the reaction to this part of the speech may betray the listener's racial prejudices more than anything else.
Joan's criticism of this part of the speech is absolutely ridiculous, and at this point I am almost tempted to think that it sounds like an attempt to stir the pot so that we have another non-issue taking up media space. "He threw his grandmother under the bus!" Are we to be treated to talking heads grilling Obama about whether he vetted this with his grandmother? Please....
Needless to say, add my name to the heap of commenters who have grown disgusted with Joan's (and Salon's in general) charade of impartiality. Please just be honest if you have already made your choice for Clinton. I used to really value Salon and what it had to offer, at this point I am more often than not made angry by the disingenuousness and sophistry of what I read here - this is no longer honest journalism.
Still waiting for the counterbalancing critical analysis of Hillary.
I like Obama, but he's not god or anything. Carry on
She should just go back to Wonkette. She seems hopelessly out of her depth in the real world - REALLY sick of hearing about how much she idolizes McCain.
Can you please please please get Camille Paglia to write another one of those *iconoclastic analyses* that rave about what a new great icon Palin is for women everywhere? Those things are interesting to read, if nothing else.
I'm waiting for the Annie Liebovitz photo shoot where she dresses her up in some glamazon Bob Mackie outfit. You know it's coming.
