Thank you, King, for your brilliant takedown of the bogus storyline that the refs handed the Super Bowl to the Steelers. I'd grown increasingly frustrated over the past two days as this myth congealed into received wisdom, and I'm pleased that you and and other commentators are knocking it down. The fact is this: from the coachers to the team the Steelers outplayed the Seahawks when the game was on the line.
Here's my advice to the Seattle whiners and the chuckleheads from ESPN (you know who you are) who are crying about the refs and deflecting blame for 1) Holmgren's and Hasselbeck's strange playcalling at crunchtime, 2) dropped passes, 3) bad defensive plays, and 4) atrocious clock-management at the end of both halfs: If bitching about how the zebras gave the game to the Steelers helps you sleep during the next rainy six months then by all means wallow as much as you like. But please, keep the pity party to yourselves.
What a bunch of whiny sore losers.
...the Tigers out of the 119-loss season. But you can't the 119-loss season out of the Tigers.
At least my alma mater, Penn State, salvaged some honor for the Big 10 by holding the Tennessee Vols to 10 points in a 20-10 win on New Year's Day. QB Morelli played his best game of the year, a good portent for next fall in Happy Valley. (I'm not saying the Nittany Lions would have won last night, but I believe that Penn State's D would have kept Leaf and Co. in check more than the sieve that was the Buckeyes' defense.)
If Bush resigns, Cheney becomes president, n'est-ce pas? (I know, he's president in everything but name anyway, but still....) Could he then appoint Rove as Veep? Talk about a Hobson's Choice.
Just a thought.
Okay, this is only anecdotal, but in my youth I had the privilege of watching both Clemente and Mazeroski play at Forbes Field (R.I.P.). Voters certainly were spot on in nominating Clemente, but I have to agree with King K. Where's Maz?
The fact that he fielded as well as he did on Forbes Field's notoriously hard infield-- (remember Tony Kubek taking one in the Adam's apple on that bad bounce in the 1960s World Series?)-- is just one testament to his greatness. Both anecdotally and, I believe, statistically, Maz deserves to be number one on that Rawlings list.
What? Did Cheney knee-cap him for telling the truth?!
Wait just a minute there, Chris. I'm a male Pittsburgh native. I carry 173 pounds on a 5-ft., 10-in. frame, and I'm an Obama backer. (Then again I've lived in L.A. for a while now, so maybe Chris has something.) One of my brothers is a bit beefy, but he does weight training.
If Chris is right, blame the pierogi and the Philly cheese steak, I say.
I'm not sure it follows that just because Clinton won primary contests against Obama in the "large states" she will carry those states in the general election against McCain. Different contests, different opponents.
Will somebody please make it clear to my spin-addled brain?
I'm not sure it follows that just because Clinton won the "large states" (sometimes by slim margins) in the primaries against Obama she will win these states in the general election against McCain. Different contests, different opponent.
Will someone please make this line of argument clear to my spin-addled brain?
Wednesday's farcical proceedings in Philadelphia have prompted me to send this entreaty to all the Democratic voters in Pittsburgh, my hometown.
I'm the son of a sheet-metal worker and a remarkable woman who raised seven kids in a tiny two-story, three-bedroom home in Carrick. My dad died last year at 82; we honored my mom with a surprise party on her 80th birthday just last month.
Although work and wanderlust have taken me to California, I love my birthplace, its history, and, most important, its people. Specifically, I love Pittsburghers' reputation for neighborliness and plain speaking (albeit with the filigree of that distinctive accent).
It is our innate desire to dispense with humbug that I appeal to here. With this reputation in mind, I feel certain that you are as appalled as I am about the wasted opportunity that was Wednesday's "debate."
Those of us living outside my home state have some recourse; me, I'm sitting here in my Pirates jersey writing to you. However, unlike those of us in California who have already voted, you have a more direct course of action. You can send a strong message at the ballot box next Tuesday.
By voting for Obama you will accomplish two important goals. One, you will be voting for the next President of the United States. Two, you will be emphatically stating to ABC News, the rest of the media, and cynics in both parties that you reject having your intelligence insulted and more important concerns about gas prices, Social Security, the Iraq war, and education tossed aside in the superficial pursuit of pins and preachers.
Make me proud. Make yourselves proud.
Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
