  • I guess I'm not voting for POTUS in 2008

[Read the article: The man who would be Hillary]

I am a lifelong Democrat - definitely in the left half of the Party. I am really tired of voting for the lesser of two or three evils. I have held my nose and voted for the anti-Republican for decades, but I'm finished. I will never vote for another DLC centrist - that excludes Bayh and Clinton. I will vote for no supporters of the war in Iraq - that excludes Bayh, Clinton and Clark. I will vote for no one who believes that some imposed religion is OK and who caters to the most vicious anti-homosexual bigots in the black community- that excludes Obama. I might support Feingold but he has about as much chance of winning as my dogs.

I wouldn't be calling other people smug if I were you - since you are the apotheosis of smug posters on Salon. You have contributed not one iota of substantive content to any debate - you have only one thing to say. You are a disgusting and really quite vicious little religious bigot. You can try to dress it up and spin it, but that is all that you have - religious bigotry. My freedom and welfare are 100 times more at risk from Bush and his neo-Stalinist minions than I am from Islam here or anywhere else. Fundies are the problem - be they Muslim, Christian or Jewish, you know, closed minded little bigots like you. Try Free Reublic or any of the other right blog o' Nazi sites - they'll love you. Here, you are just pathetic.

  • A few comments

[Read the article: The people vs. Courtney Love]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

1- What is embarassing about choosing to take a well paid job as an actress in an Oliver Stone movie? The Larry Flynt movie was no more controversial than JFK, and I don't see any criticism here for any of the men who took unsavory character parts in that film. This small bit is an excellent example of the bias and preconceived crap in this article.

2- Is CL punk? I don't know. Is Nirvana punk? I don't know that either, but if one is, the other is. What is punk? Compared to Black Flag, Youth Brigade, and a bunch of others, Nirvana is just some white boys from the 'burbs playing at punk. That said, I like Nirvana - a lot - but are they punk? I really don't think so.

3- Writing her own lyrics is an issue, I saw some musicianship issues, etc. What is this? The Sex Pistols were arguably the greatest punk band ever, but, in the beginning, they could barely, and I mean barely, play their instruments. Musicianship wasn't why we listened to them - it was something else. If you don't know what it was, I can't explain it to you, but it had nothing whatever to do with who wrote the lyrics.

  • Big Tent? Yes, but...

[Read the article: Lost faith in the GOP]

I am an atheist, but I welcome anyone to the effort to eliminate the neo-Stalinists from power in this country. And, yes, we should do whatever we can to stress common ground with a wide range of people. BUT, in the process, we will not give up or turn our backs on our core values.

The Democratic Party is offically pro-choice - we believe that women have the right to control their own bodies and reproductive decisions. This will NOT change or tens of miilions of us will find a new home.

Without campaigning for gay marriage, we will insist that anti-homosexual bigotry not be part of the Democratic Party. We believe in equal rights for all Americans regardless of status.

We oppose imposed religion of any kind - that means no prayer in schools, no teaching of religion masquerading as science, no subsidies to religion, no special rights for Christians, etc.

These are just a few examples. So, big tent, yes, if possible, but we do not give up our core values to accommodate some latecomers to the dance.

    Gonzoid-

You couldn't possibly be more wrong. What the U.S. really needs is about 6 political parties so that each group of Americans can finally vote FOR something instead of just against something. I am really sick and tired of holding my nose and voting for the lesser of two or three evils. If the Dems send up another DLC centrist scumbag in 2008, I'm maybe off to the Greens although there is much to dislike about them as well. Hillary Clinton, for example, is no friend of the environment - in fact, she's unfriendly to most progressive ideas - so why shouldn't I try to find a candidate who reflects what I believe?

  • It is what it is

[Read the article: Lieberman won't rule out switching parties]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

If Joe flips, he flips, and we all lose. Well, we lose anyway. On any matter of substance, Lieberman is a neo-Stalinist like the Bushies, and he will betray us on everything important. He supports the war in Iraq, torture, kangaroo courts, illegal warantless surveillance, etc. He hasn't been a real Democrat ever in his career.

  • You make some good points, but...

[Read the article: Where the girls aren't: The Times Magazine's comedy issue]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

1- Parker Posey is not an up and coming star in Hollywood. She's been around for 15 years, and she's right about where she was 6-7 years ago. I like her performances very much, but, like Catherine O'Hara, she is not now nor will she ever be a star.

2- Tina Fey sucks - big time.

3- $86 million sounds like a lot of money, but that does not constitute a 'monster hit'. It is a fair to middlin' gross. $200 million would be a 'monster hit'.

4- I detest Jim Carrey, but no film featuring female comedy stars has ever come close to anything Carrey made in terms of box office except Legally Blonde with Reese Witherspoon - who you don't even mention.

    GMAC-

You couldn't be more wrong. A core value of the Democratic Party is equal rights for all Americans regardless of status. Since when is equal rights not an important issue? It's a lot more important than the tech trade deficit, IMHO.
