  • Who's fault is it?

[Read the article: No one wants to buy a home. Whose fault is it?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I have to admit, I was laughing hard when I wrote this. Whose fault is it?

    You're kidding, right?

    Try EVERYONE...

The agents who want to maximize their already exorbitant take - anywhere from 11 to 15 percent.

The sellers who want to make enormous profits by inflating their price.

The mortgage brokers who want to make additional thousands off each deal.

The buyers, who are so desperate for a home that they will sign any mortgage documents placed under their greedy noses, while at the same time putting as much cash back into their bottomless pockets as they possibly can, as fast as they possibly can.

The lenders, who lend - to people that shouldn't be lent ANY amount of money - far, far too MUCH money using debt vehicles that absolutely STICK IT to the lender, so much so that foreclosure rates have skyrocketted in the past year.

And last but not least the government, who makes additional extortio...sorry, um, REVENUE, when property values go UP.

And lets not forget the appraisers!

Its called the Law Of Diminishing Returns, by the way. There comes a point in ANY system when what you put in no longer increases what you take out, but in fact reduces output, in this case, profit and appreciation of value.

Which is exactly what is happening to the real estate market.

    Whose fault is it??

    lol

  • The Immigration Bill

[Read the article: Hitting a wall on immigration]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Dear Mr. Shapiro.

    And excellent article.

What I don't think most folks understand is that the immigration bill has been very carefully designed to both fail to pass in congress AND also fail to actually work, in the extraordinarily unlikely event that it ever passes into law in ANY form whatsoever.

Consider the following points: First, this bill is chock-full of admendments that enough senators find repugnant enough to vote against, while at the same time only lip service is being given to the only logical starting point in the process of controlling illegal immigration, i.e. securing the border. It is quite clear from this that the powers that be simply are not interested in any change in the status of the so-called immigration problem. 2) The proposed legislation would force illegal aliens to pay a fine of $5,000, register as undocumented aliens, and most significantly, go back to their country of origin and wait 8 to 13 YEARS just for a CHANCE to get back into the States. In other words, it expects people with jobs, homes, families, educations and businesses to down tools and do the very thing they've been dilligently and strenuously avoiding for years if not decades - to go back to where they came from. How many illegal aliens, given their long years of living and prospering and raising children in the United States, does ANYONE think are going to go back to whatever socio-economic nightmare they originally fled from, and get in line for a decade or more without any real expectation of ever getting back in?

Get real: This is just another snow-job, a package of political subtefuge carefully wrought to do absolutely nothing at all about the problem at hand, while at the same time being held up as a flag of bigotted patriotism, politically- expedient security-consciousness and all american faux-apple pie.

    ...and...

You have all - sorry, ALMOST all - proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the accuracy, veracity and truth of each and every premise detailed and discussed in P.W. Singer's most excellent article.

    In SPADES.

    Great Job.

    REALLY.

    Just great.

    Just two things to say.

Welcome to the 21st century American Police State.

Arm yourself, you're going to need that protection from those you THOUGHT were out there to protect you.

    Have fun.

  • An open letter to Viacom/CBS

[Read the article: Dan Rather stands by his story]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Dear Viacom/CBS,

Having read this article on Salon.com, and other articles on this subject as well, I can only come to the conclusion that you have traded journalistic accuracy, impartiality and excellence for favor-currying, self-censorship for political gain, and the wilful destruction of people's financial lives for the purpose of attempting to cozy up to washington parasites.

Therefore, be advised that I will will no longer watch any television, Internet material or other kinds of media and entertainment that are owned, produced or in any way funded by Viacom or any of its divisions, companies or affiliates. Furthermore, I intend to boycott all products that are advertized by the same. Your conduct in this matter has been duplicitous, reprehensible and downright disgusting, and no honest, decent, hard-working person can countenance even the idea of continuing to contribute to your bottom line.

I call upon all people to do the same as I have. It is high time that we began to use our hard-won earnings to arrest this kind of foul and disgusting behaviour, and do everything that we can to stop the pervasive corruption that oozes from the highest offices in our nation into our lives and homes on a daily basis.
