  • Obama takes lieberman to the woodshed

[Read the article: Sitting shiva with Hillary]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Following Obama's speech at AIPAC, Lieberman got on a conference call and criticized Obama's assertion that our actions in Iraq have strengthened Iran and made Israel less seafe.

During a Senate vote Wednesday, Obama dragged Lieberman by the hand to a far corner of the Senate chamber and engaged in what appeared to reporters in the gallery as an intense, three-minute conversation.

While it was unclear what the two were discussing, the body language suggested that Obama was trying to convince Lieberman of something and his stance appeared slightly intimidating.

Using forceful, but not angry, hand gestures, Obama literally backed up Lieberman against the wall, leaned in very close at times, and appeared to be trying to dominate the conversation, as the two talked over each other in a few instances.

Still, Obama and Lieberman seemed to be trying to keep the back-and-forth congenial as they both patted each other on the back during and after the exchange.

Afterwards, Obama smiled and pointed up at reporters peering over the edge of the press gallery for a better glimpse of their interaction.

Obama loyalists were quick to express their frustration with Lieberman's decision and warned that if he continues to take a lead role in attacking Obama it could complicate his professional relationship with the Caucus.

Dana I'm not sure if you realize this or not, but this story is about Hillary. Why in the hell would anyone post a response to an article about Hillary and not mention Hillary?

In fact, if you're tired of the talk about Hillary, why are you reading the letters section of an article about Hillary?

If you would venture to any story about Webb having the inside track on the VP slot I think you'd find the only folks mentioning Hillary are Hillary supporters.

Of course, this being Salon, you're not going to see ANY stories about any other possible VP contender BUT Hillary.

Big deal. We all knew it and you've got to give anyone respect for stickin'. Yeah she didn't come out and endorse her, but that's probably more an aspect of her role as editor-in-chief than lack of courage.

I have at times threatened to quit Salon because of her bias; but in hind site it was just the heat of battle.

I have to agree with her that McCain actually needed to be quite ahead by now. I've seen polls that indicates that Obama's pastor problems are now widely known. That makes it very difficult for Republicans to use later. One element that Swift boat attacks need to succeed is echo by the mainstream media. Barring anything new, will the media echo the Rev. Wright story later this summer and fall after it's months old?

I just don't see this having the same GOTCHA impact that Kerry's stuff did. Hillary did Obama an incredible favor on that one. By bringing the dirt out now, it lessens its impact in the general.

Also, one thing that Obama has that Gore or Kerry didn't is control of the agenda. Bush had a Republican House that could push through legislation that hurt Democrats. Now, the Democratic House will do the same to McCain (except he'll actually have to vote on bills that will either make him look like Bush III or will anger his base.) That's a huge advantage over 2000 and 2004, especially with both Republican and Democratic candidates in the Senate.

  • These ads a problem for McCain

[Read the article: The return of Willie Horton]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Voters who these ads would appeal to are unlikely to vote for Obama in the first place.

McCain still has a problem with his base while Obama's is energized. And in the fight for independent voters, these types of ads are poison.

I went to my nephew's wedding this past weekend in southern Missouri. My sister in-law is an evangelical who has voted in the past purely on abortion. She plans to vote for Obama this year. I was floored. I asked her if she realized Obama is pro-choice. She did, but she said Jesus taught many things. Care for the sick and poor, stewardship of the earth, anti-war. Her years of voting Republican hasn't ended abortion. But in the meantime she says the sick are sicker, the poor poorer and the earth in peril from polution and war.

I saw pickup trucks with gun racks with Obama bumper stickers. Something has changed. The wind is turning. I'm not sure if polls are keeping up with the rapid change going on in the heartland.

I fear becoming too optimistic. I know its going to be a helluva fight. But its hard not to be encouraged by these things seen with your own eyes.

I know that the "swift boat" type ads aren't associated with a specific campaign, but I don't think voters makethose kinds of legalistic determinations.

If a 527 group had went after Clinton on her past, do you think voters would say, we'll that's not Obama saying it. Hell, some blame Obama for the media Clinton received. You don't think folks will blame McCain for the actions of a 527?

You've got a Republican party that has spent GENERATIONS of votes against equal rights and women's, and Limbaugh calling Chelsea a dog, McCain saying she the progeny of Hillary and Reno. The decades of vile and contemeptsble rhetoric from right wing radio and here after just one primary campaign where Clinton recieved sexist treatment from the media some of her supporters are ready to hand it to the true sexists in America.

So what makes you think voters won't blame McCain for the 527's?
