  • I think "Beowulf" is just the heterosexual version of "300"

[Read the article: "Beowulf" vs. "The Lord of the Rings"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I've never felt a film version must be a literal translation of its source material (no matter how classic or revered). I think it should merely be taken for what it is. Sometimes the film actually eclipses its original source, Cabaret is a great example (and that was a near complete redo). The Loved One also improved (in a very bizarre way) on Waugh's classic in my opinion. I even prefer the film version of Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf over the original play.

"Beowulf" certainly isn't an example of that, however. I don't think the poem is in any danger from this cheesy movie. I think the art of animation may be more threatened by the likes it. I hate to see an art form with such a range of subtle qualities and styles disappear for some computer program.

One film I had a real big problem with was Francis Ford Coppola's version of Dracula. He was free to interpret the story however he wanted, but to title it "Bram Stoker's Dracul" was misleading and wrong.

  • and I wonder...

...what percentage of the military (and military families) vote the Republican nominee will get in 2008? Probably the good majority.

  • Its a popularity contest

[Read the article: Biden calls himself "the odd man out" among '08 Democrats]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

If anyone really cared about serious issues Joe Biden would be a top contender for the nomination.

Geoerge W Bush was in no way qualified to hold the office of President. He was elected purely for cosmetic reasons. Its a shame people haven't learned a valuable lesson in these past years.

  • "The problem with Bush's foreign policy"

[Read the article: The Democrats' foreign (policy) wars]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The problem with Bush's foreign policy is that in a very, very short period of time he created a hydra that will take decades to subdue. None of these candidates are offering a foreigh policy "solution" because there isn't one. Joe Biden has by far, the clearest thinking on the matter, and he shows the greatest understanding. Hillary Clinton? She'd be little better than Bush. She's a political hack beholden to the same interests that fuel George Bush. Would Obama be better than clinton? I think he would definitely move us in another direction. If Obama was smart, he would be making overtures to Joe Biden now. He's realistically not in contention for the nomination, but his experience and understanding of international relations would be a great asset.

The Democratic candidates may be struggeling to put a fine point on all of this, but make no mistake, every one of the Republican candidates (Ron Paul excluded) are a major disaster waiting to happen.

  • the horror, the horror

[Read the article: Goodbye, "Decider." Hello, "Mr. Interrupter"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

One of history's greatest mysteries will be how the hell that nincompoop (there, I said it) ever got to be President of the United States.

If he hadn't been born into a privilaged, well-connected political family, if he had just been born into a normal, middle-class family, he wouldn't have lasted a week as a greeter at Walmart.

I think at some point history will just start referring to the Cheney Administration. Its clear this guy didn't have a clue.

  • "The president has not and would not ask his spokespeople to pass on false information," she said

That was a pretty great ending to the Bachelor, especially since he couldn't even pretend to work up any interest in any of them throughout the season. Plus TWO of the lovely ladies taking a header down the stairs in one season!

Next season they should switch things up a bit. At the end when the Bachelor makes his final choice, flowers and a gazebo should instantly sweep in along with a justice of the peace who will marry them on the spot...with the hysterical and devisated loser led back in wearing a hideous empire-waisted bridesmaid gown to act as Maid of Honor...that would be darn good tv.

  • That all it took was an electrical shock to give Dick Cheney a regular heartbeat

Yes, but he was strapped to that big contraption that rose up through the roof during the thunderstorm in Frankenstein.

  • If I were President

[Read the article: Mitt Romney's Cabinet math?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

every member of my cabinet would be an athiest. Then we'd get down to the business of solving our problems.

  • Barbra Streisand?

[Read the article: Clinton's answer to Oprah?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Why didn't she just get Lannie Kazan? Who the hell cares about Barbra Streisand anymore?

Will John Edwards start dragging Cher around now?

  • Bush is in a class by himself

[Read the article: The Clinton vs. Obama slugfest continues]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Any candidate in serious contention would be an idiot to talk about "what if I lose." Fred Thompson has already said he doubts he'll be the nominee. He's acting like a loser, and he's being treated like a loser. I see nothing wrong with Clinton's answer.

I also see nothing wrong with Obama's retort. Albright can say whatever she wants. He made his point, and he made a valid point.

The overall tone is getting far to shrill from both camps for my taste. Every little snipe takes more attention away from the real issues. To be honest, it just bolsters the notion of the Clinton's craven, whatever it takes to get power MO; and it dulls Obama's carefully constructed "above the fray" persona.

But its getting just as nasty on the Republican side, so we're stuck with business as usual.

  • the difference

[Read the article: Barack Obama is hip to Margaret Mead]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Hillary Clinton would have given an answer "designed" to move her from point A to point B at the moment. Obama gave a thoughtfull responce to the question. I've been hard on Obama, but he's beginning to grow on me. I think he's finally beginning to emerge from the hype.
