Who will undo this mess?
[Read the article: John Yoo: Spearhead or scapegoat?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Without impeachment hearings, what is the official route to declaring Bush's policies illegal and preventing an administration down the road from asking Yoo II to sanction similar ideas based on precedence? Will a congressional committee uncover all secret memos and officially reject them? Will they review recent bills and revoke illegal signing statements? Will they repeal the Military Commissions and Patriot acts? I've not heard any plans for that, although I hope that at least Democrats view this as an imperative.
Anyway, I want to know who of the anti-impeachment crowd will step forward and guarantee us a Democratic win this year. They seem so sure that the reign of ultra-conservatives is about to end that they think waiting for November is the safest plan. But Republicans aren't going to just leave without a fight and the Dems' comfy strategy may back-fire. Who's going to fix this mess if McCain wins? Our anti-impeachment heroes?

Thank you for this well-written piece
[Read the article: Interrogating Abu Ghraib]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Sometimes I'm simply grateful that there are a few people, like Mr. Morris, who have a wider lens than I have when we're looking at the same picture. I owe them.
The way you wrote up this interview and the things Morris said made me remember this crucial question: "How would I act?" It's fine and justified to blame the administration, but each one of us also has to seek an honest answer to that question. If all we do is blame somebody else without introspection, that's a good indicator as to the answer.

I support this effort 100%, as long as the ads stick to ISSUES
[Read the article: Major new ad campaign -- aimed at Blue Dog Rep. Chris Carney -- begins]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]That's why I'm glad that there will be a group that's independent from ActBlue (which focuses on candidates).
The reason I'm so strongly in favor of these ads is that TV and newspapers are the best way to "talk" to our Congress people. Calling them helps, but it's not public enough to worry them. Blogging is great, but our leaders know that most blogs preach to the choir so they don't perceive them as a big threat.
We need TV ads, newspaper ads, and letters to the Editor in major papers. The latter is a crap shoot, because your piece likely never gets published.
So: I think this new approach is brilliant. Running the news paper ads to reinforce the TV ads is fantastic - they provide more context than the TV ad can.
Thank you for working on this! I will contribute, as long as I can choose the specific issue. FISA is one of my top peeves, so I'm delighted.

Thank you, Glenn!
[Read the article: Campaign against warrantless eavesdropping and telecom amnesty is expanding]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I've donated (twice). And will only donate again to Obama if he makes a real stand. This is a signature issue for me. If he can make a speech about fathers, he can darn well spend pulpit time on FISA to show his commitment to the values of his base.
I wonder what his new National Security team thinks about this issue.

Excellent, thank you!
[Read the article: A timeline to Bush government torture]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Very helpful in trying to understand this mess. With so many actors lying or "not recalling," it's crucial to keep in mind what happened when. Thank you so much for reporting on this!

@6Stringer re: Criticizing Obama
[Read the article: George Bush's latest powers, courtesy of the Democratic Congress]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I sympathize with your worries. However, there are things Obama can do that don't jeopardize his position. He can talk to Dems in the Senate about his objection. Several of them are hoping for VP positions (like Webb, who voted FOR warrantless spying and immunitity before) or other jobs in the new administration. Or he can talk one Senator into putting a hold on this bill (like Dodd - or Leahy, who sent an email stating his opposition) and then pressure Reid into honoring that hold.
If we let Obama off the hook or tippie-toe around his passivity, then there's no incentive for him to stick his neck out even behind closed doors. Believe me, the forces of evil are already at work to get him to abandon his "changes."
We must crank up the heat now while Obama still has something to lose. So let's stop cowering and start demanding! We can't rightly criticize our Congress critters for their cowardice if we act the same way.
