The Gov of NY has a strange mixture of power and weakness

On paper the Gov of NY has an appreciable amount of power. More than that granted to the Gov of Texas for instance. But the real issue is that the State House in NY doesn't work. It never has. Every year they fail to pass a budget on time. Every year virtually every single bill fails to pass in any recognizable form. The Assembly or lower house is divided against itself as is the State Senate and neither of them work together either. So it's 4 different factions who work to stall everything. Pataki couldn't make it work, neither could Cuomo or Cary or Malcom Wilson or Nelson Rockefeller. None of them could. It's just broken. Even though the lower house has a Dem supermajority they still can't work because they are all beholden to their local interests. The Senate, controlled by the GOP is more like the House of Lords. The US Supreme Court has reversed laws enacted by the NYS legislature, calling them "Stupid". The NYS Legislature is commonly called the most dysfunctional government in America. It's also the most expensive to operate of any of the states.

Is that why the mayor of Atlanta was on CNN lobbying for TARP money yesterday

Now we don't have limit ourselves to industries or companies. Or even cities that are actually in financial straits. We can give it to Atlanta who's mayor is concerned there MIGHT be a problem in the future, and what the hell, giving them money would be a good thing.

It's just another marketplace of ideas

You are free to discard whichever of them you wish. Ben Stein is a nut. So is Larry Kudlow. So are a lot of people you see on CNBC everyday. Bloomberg TV has some more even handed less insane people on but even they too are people in a huge basket of practitioners with their own opinions and agendas.

BTW if you're a follower of CNBC you will never hear them ever say they were ever wrong about anything. What was gospel last month is forgotten today.

Isn't it a bit disingenuous to claim that all of everyone's problems would go away

If only Joe would resign from the Senate, leave the country and go hide in a cave somewhere? I look back at the Senate's accomplishments the past two years and I have to wonder just how powerful and magical The Joe is, what with his ability to allow the Congress to garner an approval rating in the mid teens. But, one traitor at a time I guess which is a bad plan. Anyone who's read The Prince should know that you do all your really big evil all at once. Get it over with. The Democrats in the Senate should pillory, expel, impeach, indict all the less than supportive Democrats all at once instead of dribbling it out onesies twosies.

Sorry but either you're leaving out part of the story or someone left it out when they told you.

A clerk at TJMAXX down south

Once asked me if I was being a "Cheap Jew", after I questioned the amount rung up on several items. Sometimes you just gotta laugh. Or mace the bastards, either one.

I want a bumpersticker that says:

"My other car is what your daughter got pregnant in"

And another one that says:

"Chose meth, your preacher did"

No one ever got to ask him any hard questions

They were too busy being dazzled by the bible thumper with a dynamite weight loss plan. So screw him on a flaming pile of gospels.

On South Carolina Public Radio today

They wanted to shape this as a black issue. As in foreclosure = racism, in Detroit. I'm not a sociologist but there's something smarmy about that. Detroit lost more people than any other city not actually underwater. It's been disintegrating for decades.

We should rollup this silly 'war on terror' and put it away

It's an insane waste of time and effort. And let's say we get one 911 ever 10 years. Those are losses we would all be willing to risk.

Open container and minor possession of alcohol

Are significant sources of revenue for 'law enforcement'. Plus as an added bonus, it's probable cause for searching so if said young person is found with a trivial amount of weed too, that's a goldmine.

Why care either way?

There will always be some car around you can buy. If not a Detroit product than some other. One would think that in the long run if there was no GM or Ford someone else would pick up the slack. And car companies learned a long time ago that building cars in another country and shipping them around the world is counterproductive. That's why Toyota, Nissan, Honda, BMW all have factories here. So what will happen is that we'll get more factories employing more people. The names on the factories will be different. In as much as we want to say we support unions, I heard an NPR piece yesterday about a UAW worker in Ohio who was lamenting the end of his high paying job after 22 years and he didn't have a High School Diploma.

We it guess it sucks to be you, then.

Looks good to me.

We need the major markets to drop another 50%. We need 10-15% unemployment. Flush the whole system out and start over. With any luck it will be a very cold winter and all those newly homeless people will just freeze to death in the snow. Less to worry about come springtime.

I am sick to death of listening to people worship Bill Hicks

You can get hours and hours of Bill Hicks on YouTube. He was not all that funny - - - now. Maybe then it was fresh but watching a guy start screaming that Hitler was right as he lays on the floor is not all that funny. Bill Hicks was more of a monologuist not a comedian.

If you like dark comedy that's actually comedy, watch Doug Stanhope.
