Funny you should mention that

Because if PETA had their way all the research that lead directly to organ donation would have been stopped dead in its tracks. And I heartily approve of that. Not for silly religious reasons but because I think we should all die when its our time to die. No heroic efforts, no machines, no technology, nothing. So while I loathe the likes of Ingrid Newkirk, I do in fact support their efforts to unwind the civilization clock a few hundred or a thousand years. Most people don't get medical care anyway. We should end it all.

When will you realize that

in order to secure any measure of success in Afghanistan you will have to resort to exactly the same measures as the Shah of Iran did - e.g. jumpstart the country ahead 500 years by force. And he'll go down in history as the Great Evil of SW Asia. We should walk away from Afghanistan before it consumes us as it has consumed all other takers. If you want little girls to go to school, give them bus tickets to Pakistan or Indonesia.

We should have a Pre President

Let Obama rule as President now. Except none of the laws are binding until the inauguration. He could rule unilaterally like Bush has for 8 years and that hasn't stopped anyone.

Just tell me one thing

Is it chock full of that horrible handheld jittery crud, random zooms in and out and a general slavishness to the blair witch school of low-fi nonsense? Because I just walk out of movies with that. Which is about 97% of all movies now.

So who is perfect that we can't deal with anyone else?

I want you to point out all the perfect countries that do everything wonderfully so that we can trade with them and ignore the rest. I for one am a little upset by the US's support of South Africa given their policies have murdered at least 50,000 AIDS victims.

If 'god' became declasse she's drop god like uranium

Sarah Palin is an opportunist of the highest order. If the country veered away from psychochristianity so would she.

If you like ordinary people

Watch YouTube. THAT's reality. Anyway does FNL still affect that jittery handheld crap? Are tripods too 'fake'?

That Very Special ER Episode

The one where they all declare their love for one another while a flaming helicopter crashes into a busload of AIDS orphans right outside the ER doors and there's a gang of terrorists who break into the hospital and hold everyone hostage while their drug lord gets a liver transplant at gunpoint. Oh, and it's Christmas.

Yeah I love that shit.

Isaac Newton would disagree with you Mr. Gladwell

So would Gauss, Liebnitz, Pascal, Rheinmann. We'll give Gladwell the Bernouilli family though. And most of the Bachs.

Not everyone in the Khmer Rouge personally murdered people either

I'm sure some of them were rather nice, humane even. Maybe they were even, dare we say, liberal? However history has made its judgment and the Khmer Rouge come out on the poor end of that evaluation. And to be fair, just because some of your friends are violent sociopaths doesn't mean you are. But it does at least bring the surface the question of why they were your friends.

For my money I'll take the view of Todd Gitlin who as a founder of the SDS saw it eventually not for what it turned into but into what it always was. After the Port Huron Declaration the SDS movement essentially did nothing and accomplished nothing. There's no shame in saying that. the Weathermen, coming on the tails of that and declaring that more violence is the answer especially when none of the people saying that are actually prepared for the revolution that they want everyone to do for them, is just being blockheaded and dull.

Sorry Bill, I'm sure you're a nice guy. But you're a misguided ideologue and an unapologetic zealot the world has no use for. Stop asking us to apologize to you for that. But I'm sure there's some old Red Army Faction leftovers still in Germany who would support you.

Probably at the end of the day, it's rather blurry

The professionals admit to one another that it's not an utterly ineffective tool. At the same time they realize it's absolutely impolitic to say that aloud. You know it's a bit like Margaret Sanger. There is some social good in eugenics but it's nearly impossible to defend that stance openly. I guess every country likes it's more effective secrets to stay that way - effective AND secret. Which is probably why we don't vote for CIA chief the same as we vote for county Sheriff.

Most of those GOP claims have already been disavowed by the GOP people who made them

It's silly and stupid to listen to it. Those claims of 'mischief' were already corrected and stated to be false by the very same GOP staffers who made them in the first place.

But as any statistician will tell you, even with so small a gap as this is unlikely though not impossible to finally go in the other direction for the other guy. I hope the Democrats won't claim that 'everything is rigged' if the vote ultimately goes to Coleman as it is right now.

That's a very polite thing for Newton to say

What with being by all accounts the world's greatest arrogant prick. He may have claimed that statement as his own but any mathematician who's studied the history of mathematics (that's a real field of study) will tell you, there's really not much in the way of mathematics before Newton that would have lead him to develop what he did. He didn't only invent the methods, he invented the questions too.

Similarly, while there was indeed an English language before Shakespeare, and philosophy before Aristotle, so what?

Holly

Your first problem is that you need to carefully circumscribe what that actually is. Some would say that locking people up w/o charge alone is 'torture'.
