Inept Treatments.
[Read the article: Psych meds drove my son crazy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If we treated any other illness like we do mental illness there would be social uproar. There is a silent code of misstreating people with all kinds of mental illness. Most decisions are made by the insurance companies that prefer the medication approach, just keep them contained. Add to this the profit motive from the drug companies and you get a deadly combination.
First, it's hit and miss. They prescribe drugs and then wait and see. People are left to their own resources during the experimentation stage and are not monitored. Can you imagine if we treated cancer patients this way. They don't know how the drugs will work or not work.
Second, the insurance companies are looking for the cheapest methods. A pill is way cheaper than observation, evaluation and therapy. Why get real kowledge about the individual patient when we can just lump them and look at statistics.
Third, face it, there is little compassion for the mentally ill.
Fourth, if you have a loved one with mental illness you will be put through an emotional roller coaster like nothing else. You will watch your loved one suffer, you will find yourself angry, scared and fearfull.
I am glad Ms. Bauer found a resolution, imagine the millions that don't have a happy ending.
Next time you see someone in the streets suffering, think about how our society has neglected these people Think about how some family somewhere is at it's wits end, not knowing what to do and how to do it, and a system of health care that has no strategies. Shame on us.

Anti boomer voices!!
[Read the article: I'm younger than that now]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]There is a toxic anti boomer voice that is rather comic. Who is so hateful of the boomers and why? Gee, Mr/Ms. non boomer are you jealous cause our music was better? Are you jealous cause you never invented new clothes? Are you jealous cause there were not as many of you in your generation? Are you jealous cause we did all kinds of things with few severe consequences, particularly sex? We made your youth way more fun than it could have been if we did not go around being such smart alecs.
Leave us alone. We are old and getting older. We will make a better path to your old age as well. You will get better food in the retirement home. You will have more choices on how to retire.
Remember like my father used to say about the boomers (a clever old Greek guy that he was)"you guys think you invented the female orgasm, homosexuality and drugs". So, let us have our delusions into old age. What did your generation invent? MySpace?
TO Gary and the other Boomers: Yes, old age happens. We did not invent it like we think we invented child birth, parental angst, etc...etc..etc. Guess what, death also happens. Every life event is not epiphanic, it's friggin life.

Paternalistic Absolutist turn to Relativism
[Read the article: The Libby lobby's pardon campaign]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Amazing how the line of Conservative absolutists turn to the notions of leniency, clemency, compassion, forgivennes and pardon when one of their own is found guilty. The harsh sentence people who are the gatekeepers want to put everyone behind the gates they do not like and they want to exempt their kind from the "rule of law" absolutism and paternalism.
Why is even pardon being discussed? Why? Cause a priveleged white man should never be punished for their missdeeds? Cause privleged right wing men are allowed to have us consider their past (considering his past was not noble)?
Such hypocritical scoundrels, they have no shame, no shame whatsoever.

You got it !!
[Read the article: "The Sopranos" goes dark]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Exaclty, best review I read (cause it resembles my take) . He gave us what we wanted cause like Tony we wanted the easy way out, we wanted him to live at any cost. He lives, for what purpose? He learned nothing from therapy and life, he just rolls on to the next crisis, consuming, killing and having fun. And guess what, we loved him and identified with him and called him a family man. Right. Awesome. No redemption for anyone and the disease goes to the next generation. Cause, we don't want to do the hard work for change, we want the status quo. Slap. And to all those who harp on his relationship with his mom, I say, the mom was dead and Tony was still a sociopath, so much for all the poor me I was a victim of my parents. We make choices and so did his kids, they choose the easy way, the mob way. And it goes on. The status quo, that is Made In America for sure.

Loving LA
[Read the article: I love L.A.]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The best part about LA, is that all those who hate LA have never really been to LA. They get their images and ideas about LA from the same industries they despise: film and tv. They are stuck in some strange LA artificially made bubble. Then when they go to visit, they think Disneyland is in LA, so much for geography.
My favorite is all the Northern Californians, where I live, who have never stepped in LA ranting and raving about something they do not know about. Thinking the Bay Area, (same goes for Seattle) is the "it" city. Sometimes, Angelinos, don't even care about the rivarly that is self created by Bay Areans and Seattle people. They just think it's quaint.
