The Evil of Banality is right.
[Read the article: The evil of banality]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Thanks for referencing Arendt. I think the evil of banality goes not only for Powell, but for all the Democrats in Congress who voted for the war and who stood afraid to speak out against the idiotic policy. Shame on the whole lot of them and also shame on us the American people for going on with our daily lives and not raising our voices in anger. Anger that our country has been plunged into a criminal invasion. And please, we don't deserve the right to ever judge the Germans, we have now joined the club of banality.

Neuremburg !!!
[Read the article: U.S. generals call for Democratic takeover]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"well, do you remember Neuremburg? arguments like we "can't" because it is our duty to follow the president don't wash in an illegal war...
-- susan daniel"
I agree with Susan and would like to see this discussion expanded. I am sorry if these two guys have second thoughts now and maybe they see the change coming and want to save their skins. But I think Neuremburg needs to be brought back for the lot of them and we the American people need to go through a personal trial for letting this happen. For our system failing and allowing a cabal of lunatics to cause such a disaster. And how dare he say that even in 2004 he could not have been tortured enough to vote for Kerry--if by then he still did not get it, they should be put on trial the lot of them. Shame to our nation they brought and a calamity to the people of Iraq.

Change the drapes and the gender of leadership.
[Read the article: Curtains for Pelosi?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]On election night I watched the results with a roomfull of gay guys in San Francisco. We thought someone should make a video with a bunch of gay guys with fabric samples walking in on Hastert and announcing: "We are from San Francisco and we are here to change the drapes".
Nancy survived in the old boys network by being Nancy. Puhleaze, don't everyone now jump in and inflict the bland brand of feminism that suits a certain academic cadre. Real women in real jobs know how to get things done. Remember Malcolm X, by any means necessary. I love Nancy being the mother/grandmother.
"Real Men" have efd out country these last few years, time for a woman, in all her woman personas to enter and clean up. Compare Nancy to the robot male like Condi? Nancy any day.

How silly!!!
[Read the article: How Edward Said took intellectuals for a ride]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The headline of the article and the caricature are beyond contempt. First as others have pointed out both prove the Orientalist argument. Orientalism is so in your blood and psyche that your editors, steeped in political correctness, cannot recognise when the insult Arabs and the middle east. It is not funny, it is not clever it is simply a caricature . Let me be blunt, this is the equivelant of Sambo representation or the long standing demonic images of Jewish people.
One writer pointed out that most readers will just read that Said is a fraud and not understand the complexity of the issues in the book and in the field. There seems to be an agenda here that I quite don't understand. Of course all intellectuals and writers need to be analyzed and criticized but the comment that he took people for a ride, there is another bit of Orientalism, that Arabs are sneaky and full of trickery.
I have commented in other places about the amateurish graphics and collages but seriously, you need to sit down and grow up. This is not You Tube or the Onion.

Is this chastity?
[Read the article: Sexless and loving it]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Chastity is one virtue, humility is more important. Making your sexuality a product that you sell, is not chastity, it's a gimmick. You choose chastity along with the other virtues and you practice it in humility. Sorry folks, I have nothing against chastity for religious reasons, but making it into a comodity is not chastity. Selling books about your sexuality is not chastity, it's avarice and vanity. This is where the so called conservative Christians get it wrong, they only choose the virtues that are related to genitals, that is why I call them genitaliaists. The subtle virtues, or the more importan ones, kindness, love, generosity, humility, temperence, et. al, are forgotten, not much in the sound bite department.

AP classes !! Bah humbug.
[Read the article: My 13-year-old still believes in Santa Claus]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]My point about AP classes not an indicator of "intelligence". My mediocre son at about 4 told me, I know there is no Santa, but it makes parents feel good if us kids believe. Why infantilize a 13 year old? If you cannot have a real conversation about Santa how are you going to confront the problems coming up at 14, 15......? Use this as practice for having a talk that is uncomfortable for you and not necessarily for her.
