An important fact is whether or not Bush has claimed executive privilege in this case. I think the direction of this story hinges on this point. I mean, did Rove discuss his involvement in this matter with the president? If not, then there wouldn't be a justification for an executive privilege claim, and as mentioned by an earlier poster, Bush hasn't invoked the privilege in this matter. Do you need to correct your post?
As always, great work, Glenn. These raids, and the main-stream reaction (if any) to them show where America is heading.
Are you sure about the use of automatic weapons or sub-machine guns? Many police departments use semi-automatic rifles that one might think are automatic weapons, and it would obviously be very intimidating to see law enforcement officers wielding them. The right-wing apologists will attack you on this point if they weren't automatic weapons.
Will we see all of your predictions by then?
When I read Schumer's and Dodd's comments, I too thought of the run-up to the Iraq war (Somehow I had forgotten about the FISA debacle).
They want a bill to implement the Plan before Congress adjourns this month, but since this is so Serious, Pelosi says she won't adjourn if necessary. Well it's nice to know that our Representatives are willing to cut into their vacations to pass the Plan to avoid the World's Biggest Financial Crisis since the Great Depression.
What happens if we take (at least) two weeks or a month or more to debate this? The experts say they don't really know what exactly will happen. Is there a ticking time bomb that will explode? Please tell us Mr. Paulson and Mr. Bernanke what will happen specifically if the Plan doesn't get passed next week and then let us debate what should be done and when it should be done.
I saw this from the Associated Press:
In a session with House Democrats, they described a plan where the government would in essence set up reverse auctions, putting up money for a class of distressed assets — such as loans that are delinquent but not in default — and financial institutions would compete for how little they would accept for the investments, said Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., who participated in the conference call.
“You give them good cash; they give you the worst of the worst,” Sherman said. A critic of the plan, he complained that Bush and his economic advisers were trying to panic lawmakers into rubber-stamping it.
Is there a mix-up on the blue and red on the graph?
First the felons and now the extension. Refreshing to see the rare republican who would put the citizens before party. As an independent Florida voter, I give Charlie credit for doing it. And I'm voting for Obama next Tuesday.
by raising her black grandson, who will be the next president.
Thank you for this piece on Eric Holder. The only thing I get from the MSM is "Marc Rich, Marc Rich, Marc Rich."
Another example of why I think you are the best thinker/commentator (I don't know what else to call you) in all of the daily media.
what Paul Dirks said before me.
I do my own taxes. I have an MBA, but I'm no tax expert. I have had years in which I have been both an employee and self-employed (now who doesn't know when they are self-employed?). I was sure that I was going to owe more FICA and/or Medicare taxes than what had been withheld, but to be safe, I called the IRS, and they explained everything very clearly. Unless I hear a really good explanation for Geithner's not paying his taxes when due, Obama should find another treasury secretary.
don't have any wealth to take! The plan is to get rich by making more people poor.
They don't lie, cheat, prevaricate, or deceive. They don't even know those concepts exist.
Used to hear "you da man" from the golf gallery. You BE da man must be even cooler.
Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori has been found guilty of murder and kidnapping for death squad activities during his 10-year rule during the 1990s.
Presiding Judge Cesar San Martin says the three-judge panel determined there was no doubt that the 70-year-old Fujimori authorized the creation of a military death squad that killed some 50 people.
He is the first democratically elected former president to be tried for rights violations in his own country.
Any Peru experts out there been following this and can explain how the Peruvians were able to convict a former president?
Why did Peru decide to look back instead of just look forward?
Where did all of the money to be lended come from, Professor? Wouldn't want to explain that, make the people who are still in charge (and deciding where we go from here) look bad.
Okay, I didn't hear the speech, but if he starts with "people borrowed money they shouldn't have", I think he deflects away from how the financial and monetary policy over the last several decades, including the Clinton (Larry Summers) years, directly led to where we are.
This columnist's postings are garbage. I think you can find someone more deserving of space on your site.
It's the brown people. I'm white, and so are most of the people I know, and most of them really don't like anything but white.
Start investigating and prosecuting. Cheney and the others can talk to the prison walls.
