  • Man of the People My Ass

[Read the article: John Edwards turns on his fellow Democrats]

This guy is all style over substance. He made obscene amounts of cash as a sleazy trial lawyer yet tries to come off as Petie Populist. It might not be as hypocritically stupid as Al Gore on Global Warming with huge electric consumption of his own that he rationalizes away with carbon offsets that remind of civil war wealthy folks getting out of the draft by paying someone else to go in their place, but it is pretty damn close.

The guy's fixation with his hair cracks me up. I really could give a shit less how much he spends on his hair care. It's his money, let him do what he wants.

It does alarm me, however, when you hear how much he spends on it. I mean, if that is the way he'll piss away his own money, what will he do with ours when should he defy the odds and get into office?

I find him shallow and two-faced and emblematic of what is wrong with the democratic party.

  • Ouch

[Read the article: My son is almost 30 and won't leave home]

Letters like this give me nightmares, as I have kids ranging in age from 19 to 9. The 19 year old just fucked up in a big way and got college funding pulled and is living at home working a job to pay off debts before going back in somewhere down the road.

There is no way in hell this kid will be under my roof at 30.

But this situation has seemingly been enabled for a decade or more. In this instance I would suggest the LW put her foot down immediately and demand rent. Other posters have suggested a low-end range of $350 or so per month for a single apartment or $250 for a shared living situation.

So start demanding $300 a month based on this intelligence.

What you do with it is your own deal, but one thing I have seen friends do is to save that money and then give it back to them when they leave so they have the nest egg for first and last month's rent as well as some cash for some cheesie furniture.

But that kid needs a footprint on his ass pushing him out the door. There is no way that is a healthy relationship to be so dependent upon your mother for your survival at the age of 30.

  • I like the Tenor and Tone

I'm an old school republican who cannot stand the rancor and divisiveness that has passed for "political discourse" for the past 15 to 20 years. I am not naive enough to think this happens to be the first generation when we've had nasty, divisive "leadership," but I sure as hell can hope for a back lash pushing the pendulum back towards civility.

I like Barak Obama. I don't know enough about his views yet to know if I would consider voting for him, but he is a least an opposition member I can respect at this point. He has a great line about the nation being sick and tired of the Baby Boom Generation carrying on their intergenerational hissy fit on the national stage. That's a polite way of saying the nation wishes we'd shut the hell up.

So, yes, I appreciate Obama's positive and upbeat tenor and tone. I appreciate the softer edge to the words. On the right dark horse candidate Mike Huckabee has caught my eye for similar reasons. He's self deprecating; he acknolwedges differences of opinions. In short, he seems to understand the concept of respectful disagreement. (That he raised his hand to say he believe in creationism in a debate gave me pause, but he elaborated on that point with Jon Stewart to the point that it allayed my fears he was part of the tin foil helmet crowd. Religious, yes; crazy, no. I can live with it.)

Bring on Obama. Let's hope the right comes up with someone of comparable civility and let the two hash out the major issues of the day. Disagreement does not have to be painted as unpatriotic or one step from leading us down the road to communism, McCartyism, fascism or whateverism. It simply means we have differing ideas as to how to move forward ... AS A NATION.
