Giving Them A Rodney
[Read the article: I hate your column and all the letter writers too!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The letter to which Mr. Tennis responded was one big meandering Rodney King quote of "Can't we all just get along?" I also find it hysterical that some individual immediately assumes it is a Cary Tennis conspiracy with him ghost writing the letters to advance an agenda. That's a mighty thin tin foil helmet that'll pick up a conspiracy theory in an advice column.
Still, the old red state/blue state differences will emerge from time to time on advice columns in terms of what folks deem to be a "problem." Not everyone seeks to drop into analysis paralysis. Some of the columns here would, to me, have been better served with a simple, "Suck it up, Nancy," which is why I am not in the advice column business.
So, yeah, some of the beefs submitted to Mr. Tennis for rumination will most assuredly cause an eye roll or two. Some of that will manifest itself in the form of "Are You Kidding Me???" letters. If people do not appreciate the commentary for fear it will damage their pysche, then it would seem those folks are free not to read the letters.
I mean, let's be realistic. Some of the things over which people obsess are pretty damn funny. Cat poop in a garden gets one ready to call in the heavy artillery? That's funny. And, no, it may not be a laugh with the complainant, but it's still a pretty damn good laugh.
Letters are what they are. If folks are afraid of people's honest opinions about things, then they are welcome to not read the letters. But really, wouldn't we all be a little bit better off if we would just take the lemons out of our mouths, stop looking around for reasons to claim ourselves victims, and learn to laugh a little bit more? Turn off Sha-Na-Na's "Charlie Brown" (Why is everybody always picking on me?) and dial in Monty Python's Life of Brian Song (Always look on the bright side of life).
Some people are twerps. Getting called on it can be healthy, whether it comes from Cary, letters, or some combination thereof.
