Original article: WayLay

Well, Anon

You may be surprised to know that there are others out here that think that Carol Lay is just another marginally talented, angst ridden "artiste". This, from a guy that reads Zippy the Pinhead, The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, Life in Hell, and the Angry Dykes strips. You might say I know good comics.

If Ms. Lay's work was better it would recieve greater acclaim, but alas, the only place I have ever encountered it was here on Salon. Perhaps she knows someone...

Congratulations

Your child will grow up fatherless and disadvantaged. But you got what you want, and that is what is most important. How sad.

Score one for the traditional, intact, normal family!

A few posts back someone wrote: "To paraphrase Tolstoy, all families are (mostly) unhappy in their own way." If that's what Tolstoy said, then he is a sad loser in the family category. I married my wife in college, we waited five years, had two boys 19 months apart, and it has been pretty much a party ever since. We are not rich, but we have always had what we needed. What we relished most was time together loving on each other, whether it be a night just watching TV on the couch, or hiking the trials of the Blue Ridge mountains.

If you ask my wife and my kids they would all agree. I am suprememly confident of that. Of course I guess you could say that they are all lying because they are terrified of the cruel retribution that I, as Alpha Male would rain down on them if they didn't, but that would only be your prejudice showing. It's kind of funny, because we both come from somewhat dysfunctional families (siblings ending up in jail, terminally angry at parents, substance abuse), yet I do not consider ours at all dysfunctional. We have had our fights and hurts, but nothing that would border on hatred or divorce causing. We have been more than fortunate, sometimes scarily so.

I must give credit where credit is due, however. As a family we have done our best to learn and follow the teachings of Jesus. When you do that in earnest, it is nearly impossible for things to go badly.

It's called the Messiah Complex

We have experienced it first hand. No is good enough for their dogs...

We have two dogs. A registered Border Collie (BC), and a BC mix. We got the mix from local animal control. What a great dog! Then we wanted to get her a companion, so we looked at two BC rescue organizations. BCs are high energy dogs that require space and attention. We have five wooded acres out of town, and my wife works mostly at home. What more could you ask for right? Wrong.

The local BC rescue required a home visit, which we agreed to. We agree that homes should be checked out, and that BCs have special needs. But oh, the horror when the rescue person discovered that we use radio collars! How else does one give a dog the run of five acres (that it really needs) without the use of a radio collar? Can you imagine how much it would cost to fence five acres? Remember, we are not raising livestock here.

Anyway, the rescue group declined our application due to our use of "cruel" fencing. Knowing that these same people let suburbia dwelling folks with 1/10 acre yards have their dogs, I ask you which is worse, a high energy dog fenced in a tiny yard, or that same, very smart dog getting one or two pokes (and I assure you that is all it takes for a BC to learn the boundary) and having the run of 5 acres of woods?

The second rescue group we worked with did not have a problem with the collars. Instead, the first dog they sent us home with was utterly neurotic, and the second one was a biter, both of whom ended up back at rescue.

The answer for us was to find a good breeder, whose stock we could evaluate (it was the same price wether breeder of rescue group), and who evaluated their pups before selling them. Sadly, no more rescue kooks for us.

You can't legislate morality...

Or can you? I guess you can when you discover that by removing all restraint from personal behavior (don't YOU tell ME how to live!), you create a barbaric society that must be constricted by rule of law. You think the new way is better than the old way? Be careful what you wish for. As has now been proven time and time again, the law is far more harsh and less flexible than a little public guilt and condemnation. Like it or not, it is true.

I guess

Alana Jones could move to another area and start a new group. They could call it the Ex-Treme band.

Ha Ha

You used "regular guy" in a reference to Zac Efron. If anything, Zac Efron is a slightly irregular girl.
