Wow
[Read the article: Lord of the ruins]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I cannot wait to read this book. I could not get through the Silmarillion, though I tried, several times. This looks fascinating...

Unbelievable
[Read the article: The Pat Tillman and Jessica Lynch frauds]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I feel like I am beating my head against a wall, inarticulate with rage, when I read articles like this. My blood presssure rises and I can hardly think, with images of a smarmy W/Cheney/insert rabid fundy politician's face here showing up behind my eyelids.
How can I reasonably and rationally present such facts to my husband, one who will not read articles like this because he only gets his news from sound bites on TV or on the yahoo! mypage while he's waiting for his email to load? I hear myself getting screechy and angry, both emotions which function in my husband tuning out.
The mind boggles.

Mainstreaming Creepy
[Read the article: Do you need a sister-wife?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I agree with Ms. Lloyd. I think it is pretty sad when viewers use shows like this and the Sopranos to make family life choices. I love the Sopranos, but it is not ever going to be a model for the way I live. Yes, a lot of the terminology has become mainstream, but that does not mean the lifestyle needs to as well. Its pretty pathetic that people aren't comfortable in their relationships with their own families and friends that they feel like they have to "create" a new way of living.

There is a difference between devdasi and sex slave (really!)
[Read the article: Sacred whores or sex slaves?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Devdasis have a choice in the matter. They choose to do what they do, and can always leave the temple. They also can be relatively selective in partners. Sex slaves are bought and sold. They have no rights, they have no way of getting out, they are just a commodity.
Using the words interchangeably minimizes the average layperson's understanding of an age-old profession.
-
To clarify...
[Read the article: Sacred whores or sex slaves?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I guess I didn't make my point very clear in my earlier post. I was trying to delineate the difference between the two words. The villagers, in using the label "devdasi" to describe what they are doing to their daughters, is in fact abhorrent. They, the villagers, are using the word interchangeably, and thereby justifying their actions.
In explaining the difference, I was hoping to shed some light on the nuances of the terminology. Just trying to add another dimension to the article, something the authors missed.

Great picks
[Read the article: Summer reads]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I borrowed Nerve Damage, What the Dead Know, and The Book of Air and Shadows from my library, and they are all extremely good! I will be taking them to my book club discussion tonight to see if we can pick one for our next book. Thanks so much for the tips.

Oh Puh-lease!
[Read the article: Summer reads]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I cannot believe you recommended Sheer Abandon. Have you not read Lace? Or seen the mini-series from the 80s? Good lord, the only difference is that this tripe has 3 girls instead of the original four. And frankly, I preferred Lace. This is such an obvious lift, I am surprised that Kavya Viswa-whatever has not been credited for the writing!

Judge sounds like he is a closet sex abuser!
[Read the article: "She liked to dress provocatively"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Really...doesn't it sound like he really rather envies what those men are doing, and wishes he could be one of them? What a complete joke. And instead of considering appealing the judgment, the Attorney general Goldsmith should really "consider" sacking the "good judge"!

Who really is to blame?
[Read the article: Barbie's home ruled a toxic site]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I say...us, the consumer. We are the ones who drive the eternal search for cheaper, faster, more products. The parent who cries foul about the lead in her son's Thomas trains was probably the same parent who balked at paying higher prices for well made european wooden toys. I'm not saying that all european toys are by default wonderful, but I do know that a lot of the european toymakers have higher standards.
So...instead of blaming the toymakers and pointing fingers and getting ready to join the lawsuits, I think we as parents should take a step back and re-evaluate our own standards. Do we really want a house full of cheap plastic toys, or do we want to invest in a few, well made, beautiful wooden (or proven safe plastic) toys? When it is the health of your child and your peace of mind, I say it is definitely worth it to shell out a few more $$.
Your child will thank you.

Starbuck?
[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I thought Starbuck was played by Dirk Benedict...when did Starbuck become a woman? Or is it so late at night that I am reading Heather's article all wrong? Could be...
-
I guess I dated myself there!
[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]So I just checked wiki and saw that Katee was "Starbuck" in the new version of BS. Boy do I feel old.

Well written
[Read the article: A moral "Compass"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Thank you for a well writtne review. I chose this trilogy for my book club even though I had read it when it first came out. I have read it several times and come away with such a profound sense of loss and joy all at once. There is nothing wrong with a story that makes one think and challenge one's beliefs. I am not a Christian, but I know all the bible stories, having gone to a Catholic school. In fact, i know the stories better than my Catholic husband and our Christian friends. But then, all religions fascinate me.
I read the Chronicles of Narnia every couple years, because the stories are so beautiful. And I love reading about the lives of children, free and innocent, finding their way in the world they live in, whatever world it may be.
It is sad that people have so little faith in their faith, that they try to protect their followers from every perceived attack, warranted or not.

The Brat Stop!
[Read the article: Bowling for votes in Wisconsin]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Oh man...I have not been to the Brat Stop since 1992! I used to stop there on my way to visit my bff in Kenosha. She's since moved to Seattle, and I to California. Boy did this article bring back memories.
-
Spot on!
[Read the article: Too great to be good]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I totally agree...you said it better than I ever could. I loved the early Daniel Day Lewis movies. Loved them. Loved his characters. I couldn't stand Gangs of New York...couldn't finish watching it. And I have no desire to see Blood, the trailers look awful. He has become a caricature.
