  • Killer docs

[Read the article: Inside the minds of killer doctors]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I do think it is surprising that doctors working in the UK National Health Service would become crazed killers, if only because these are people who are working every day with other people of all kinds of ethnicities and backgrounds, and are not isolated in some kind of Islamist enclave.

I was speaking yesterday to a woman I have known for many years who works in a well-known hospital in England. She said that there is a consultant orthopedist (senior doctor) who is from Iraq, and who frequently visits back there. Recently his 18-year-old sister was killed by a car bomb.

He said that if people in Iraq knew that he was working in England, his whole family could be in danger of kidnapping or worse.

Which shows just the kind of pressures that refugees from the Mid East are under, when their family members can be threatened by criminal gangs and religious fanatics.

Even for me to mention the name of that well-known hospital here might potentially endanger his family as his name could probably be found on its Web site.

This is not to suggest that the Glasgow bombers fall into the same category. It seems likely that their disgusting crimes were committed voluntarily.

Well, thanks AKA! I write this stuff while I am playing online poker, so I am not too bothered if it is read, but I suspect 1000 readers for each person who sends a comment, if my experience of blogs is anything to go by.

  • Honi soit qui mal y pense...

[Read the article: A 19-year-old wants my husband]

So this young woman is sexually promiscuous, a drunkard, and a user of recreational drugs.

Clearly she needs a good spanking on her bare bottom to straighten her out before she gets into a lot of trouble--maybe several good spankings.

It really is incredibly generous of the LW and her husband to think of giving up their valuable time for the benefit of this wayward teenager.

Shame on you if you think there is any ulterior motive on the part of man or wife.

  • Like rats in a trap...

With all the millionaires in American these days, there must be lots and lots of children of millionaires, but where are the young Ted Kennedy's? I just think that most young Americans are not all that socially or politically aware.

She's secured a 9-to-5 job at a nonprofit combating sex trafficking, but like so many altruistic industries -- from public-interest law to social work -- it doesn't pay enough to cover necessities like rent and food.

Well, darn, I know lots of social workers who have homes, cars, and enough to eat, even without a second job. And these nonprofits don't do much except spew out inaccurate and exaggerated propaganda. They don't ever seem to actually catch sex-traffickers.

There are lots of jobs that make good money, like Registered Nurse or General Contractor that don't require an expensive education, but the catch is that the work is hard, hot and dirty, and the hours long. If 9-5 is important to you, there is a price to be paid.

  • God issues controversial pardon in Party of God Senator sin case

God said yesterday at his weekly White House press briefing "He is forgiven. I think he has suffered enough already. He used a condom, so there was no venereal disease or need for an abortion This was a one-time transgression by a guy who had never even looked at a woman with lust in his heart before--not even his wife. The escort has donated the fee to charity, so let it go, Salon people, or there will be Hell to pay when your time comes."

You mean women are attracted to powerful men? Say it ain't so, Joan!

  • Aspidistra

Those who have not read it might be interested in George Orwell's early novel Keep The Aspidista Flying, in which the struggling poet rants against the "money god", but eventually gives in and returns to a job at an advertising agency when his girlfriend becomes pregnant, and settles down to a life of domesticity. It is still worth a read.

Orwell, of course, became immensely successful towards the end of his life, but was already terminally ill with TB by that time. He did not, however, cop out, going and serving as a volunteer militiaman in the Spanish Civil War, where he was shot through the throat and narrowly escaped with his life.

I guess the Salon readership will know all this already, but just in case...

What about the alternative? He got up, handed over his books

to the disagreeable young woman, and went out; then, on an impulse, turned back and went into the other part of the library, where the periodicals were kept. The usual crowd of mangy-looking people were dozing over the papers. There was one table set apart for women's papers. He picked up one of them at random and bore it off to another table.

It was an American paper of the more domestic kind, mainly adverts with a few stories lurking apologetically among them. And WHAT adverts! Quickly he flicked over the shiny pages. Lingerie, jewelery, cosmetics, fur coats, silk stockings flicked up and down like the figures in a child's peepshow. Page after page, advert after advert. Lipsticks, undies, tinned food, patent medicines, slimming cures, face-creams. A sort of cross-section of the money-world. A panorama of ignorance, greed, vulgarity, snobbishness, whoredom, and disease.

And THAT was the world they wanted him to re-enter.
