This E!-looking film review struck me as a bit strange. None of these movies is even in the theatres any more. The reviewers are mixing apples with oranges (docs with fiction) and only discussing films that either did poorly or are from ages ago. “The 11th Hour” tanked, making less than a million domestically. “Sunshine” also tanked ($3.5 million at the box office with a $40 million production budget), and wasn’t even about global warming except in the most oblique way. “An Inconvenient Truth” came out last year and “The Day After Tomorrow” is from 3 years ago. That’s not much of a cinematic movement, if you ask me.
Global warming is the largest threat facing the planet. If this insipid review is what passes for coverage (complete with cringe worthy solar panel banter at the end), then we are all doomed.
It's strange that members of an armed forces culture, which speaks largely in acronyms, would be perplexed by online shorthand, especially since they are employed for the same reasons--brevity and community.
The whole bizarre presentation reminds me of that scene in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (book or movie) where the expert gives a talk on "drug culture" at the police convention.
"KNOW YOUR DOPE FIEND! YOUR LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT! You will not be able to see his eyes because of Tea-Shades, but his knuckles will be white from inner tension..."
Alien life forms my ass, perhaps the Navy just needs to ask itself where the incentive is to go halfway across the world to live off MREs and risk dying by IEDs in support of a HQ's WMD SNAFU.
OMG WTF!
Seriously, Giuliani has incredible power and potential to rally the fundamentalist base...to spend a quiet day at home on election day.
Romney probably has a similiar superpower, because despite his cynical flip flopping on the issues, the fundamentalists will never be able (by and large) to accept his religion as anything other than a cult--perhaps the only issue I agree with them on.
A powerful third candidate of Perot's magnitude could divide the base and allow the Dems to conquer. Hell, Hillary Clinton might even be able to win if that scenario plays out.
Not to get all quantitative on your ass, but the Kevin Bacon film "Death Sentence", which was basically the same film as "The Brave One" (both of which were "Death Wish" rehashes) came out roughly the same time as "The Brave One" and made less than 1/3 the money. So if they are going to stop casting female leads, then they should also stop casting Kevin Bacon in anything. Actually, that might be a good idea...
Have you ever seen the film “How to Get Ahead in Advertising”? If not, you should. In it there is a scene in which the protagonist’s boss carries on a conversation with him while also conversing with his secretary and with various callers via a proto-bluetooth headset, so you are never sure who he is speaking to at any one time. It was 1989 and it was prophetic.
My wife hates these things so much she’s made it a habit to give everybody talking on them the crazy person stink eye. It freaks out the yuppies in Rittenhouse Square.
I want so badly to enjoy the Republican implosion that I see taking shape, but I absolutely cannot do that as long as Hillary Clinton remains in the picture. She is the only thing that could possibly rally the fundy base to stay with the party and to get out on election day.
People, all we have to do is nominate Obama, Edwards, even Kucinich instead of her and the Dems will coast to victory on sheer Republican fatigue. We won’t even need a Republican schism. As long as Hillary remains in the picture, the race remains uncertain and even idiots like Romney and Guiliani remain threats.
There is nothing good about her candidacy or about her as a candidate. She is the least progressive, least experienced, least electable and even her fundraising numbers look weak when you realize that she is taking PAC and lobbyist money and Obama is not. I like Bill Clinton too, but kids, he is not running. Wake up!
...is that he might NOT be able to beat Hillary Clinton in the primary, but he is the best candidate to beat the Republican in the general election (whereas she is the worst). This is the tragedy of the primary process itself, which doesn’t really reflect the true feelings of Democrats across the nation, and certainly doesn’t reflect the opinion of the electorate as a whole.
But don’t count Obama out yet. I think he’s going to do much better than her among the mass of undecideds in the primary states. As recently as last month (http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2007/09/27/nh/print.html), that was still more than half the Democrats in New Hampshire. So don’t go swallowing the hype about Hillary’s overwhelming lead just yet, especially because she consistently polls low among this group of voters. By January a combination of forces (Hillary fatigue, undecided voters, and whatever votes drift in from the small fry who drop out before the first primary) might just make for an Obama victory.
