It isn't too long ago that breast feeding was not considered to be chic. Only the poor or uneducated resorted to this "distasteful" practice. Those who could afford it would hire another woman to breast feed their child. Breast feeding is bad for the figure. Just like some women today will elect a Cesarean over natural child birth because it is better for the figure.
Only in the last 50 years was this trend reversed and now those women who don't or can't breast feed are ostracized. Almost all legitimate studies, that is those who were not sponsored by the producers of baby formula, come to the conclusion that breast feeding is best for mother and child. It is also good for the mother's figure! Unless the mother has a disease that could be passed with the milk, every woman who has enough milk should give it to her child. We know what's in mother's milk of a healthy woman. Who knows what is in baby formula? Ask the Chinese, they recently found out!
Makes me wonder what motivated author to repudiate breast feeding. Either she was unable to or was she perhaps bought by a producer of baby formula?
I just love your sense of humor!
And there is so much truth to it.
Hey, Wendy and Carey,
Sorry if I tread on your toes. I didn't say anything against the use of condoms. They certainly help to prevent infection and I said so in my first posting. And I am well aware what is going on in Africa. Some countries are on the verge of collapse and many communities already have collpased. But don't blame it only on a lack of condoms. The main problem is a cultural phenomenon.
It may well be that our distant ancestors, who didn't have condoms and antibiotics, learned a long time ago that the only way to prevent catching an STD was abstention prior to pair bonding. That's how our sense of morals evolved. And it was more important for women to avoid infection, because men are expendable. Hence the double standard. Might not hurt to remember old values!
OK, I am not being very politically correct. But a bit of civility when disagreeing would stand us in good stead.
Right on! What we do to animals in what amounts to be meat producing factories is a disgrace. And all that so we can eat more cheap meat and get ever fatter. Treats us right. Vegans ought to concentrate on matters that really count. Foie gras is a minor issue. That said, many farms do indeed feed geese and ducks in a way that passes for torture.
Did I get this right? The groom says the lady's husband is "dead" to him because he didn't come? Then the lady calls the bride only to be told that she is selfish? How come selfish? And then she refuses to accept a baby gift? Am I missing something?
Looks like some people haven't quite grown up. Why would anybody want to be friends with them? And the lady shouldn't go groveling to regain the friendship. If she gets back into good grace she will always be a slave to the princess.
Before we criticize President Obama we should realize that in terms of acceptability of a person for high office, Obama has set extremely high standards. Even the appearance of wrongdoing is a disqualifier. Under President Bush, with low ethical expectations, most would not have felt the need to withdraw.
That said, a few questionable individuals failed to take the moral high road.
I wonder again and again why the theory of evolution is only questioned in the USA. In all other enlightened countries in the world, this debate ended more than 100 years ago. Certainly, there are some deniers in every country, but there they are considered to be cooks, not far removed from the flat earth society. Yes, it is a theory, but so is Gravity and other phenomena of physics. And yes, we do not yet fully understand exactly how it works. But facts is that organisms do change over time. If it is divine intervention, then the same God who causes changes in wild organisms also caused the development of domesticated animals. And anybody with half a brain knows that man interfered in the natural selection process by breeding only those specimens that suited his needs.
And it is so easy to reconcile faith in God with evolution: God created the mechanism to make it work and then let Nature take its course.
Does this guy ever murder the English language. I assume he knows better but uses a language with which his listeners can identify. And so he helps with the dumbing down of Americans.
President Obama is getting as many hits from the Left as he is from the Right.
So he must be doing something right!
As a convinced Agnostic (I know, this is a contradiction in itself, because an Agnostic's credo is "I don't know") I have finally found somebody who expresses clearly what I have thought all my life and have been unable to state so clearly. It's good to see that I am not alone.
But what about the Old Testament. Has Ehrman tackled that problem?
There is nothing more sexy than a nice Bush between the legs of a woman. My guess is prostitutes shave all hair for sanitary reasons. Probably easier to keep the equipment clean that way and may even prevent STD. It also keeps hair lice away. Too bad that most women now believe only a shaved pussy is pretty. In reality many, especially those that have seen much use, would look better with some camouflage. OK, some people may not like the feel of hair on their tongues but even that is no problem if it's clean.
Why don't you start a survey and ask men what they prefer?
