[Read the article: A look at exit polls from the Mississippi Democratic primary]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"allegiance" is hardly a word I'd use regarding "visitors". the history of black voting in this country is quite dramatic, repressive, and yet remarkable unified. In the wake of the Civil War, in the south blacks voted, when they were allowed, almost exclusively rethug. Since the Republicans were held responsible for Reconstruction (with an assist from Mr. Booth), whites went exactly the other direction. For many decades, this pattern held true. The "solid south" meant Democratic votes, and few, if any, black votes. Then, the civil rights movement changed all that. Actually, some black voters, especially in industrial northern towns where blacks had migrated for better job and (marginally) better treatment, had gone Dem during the FDR years. But it was the seminal civil rights and voting rights acts of 64 and 65 that changed the tide, and it's still there today. Whites left the Democratic party in droves (see Tricky Dick and the southern strategy, which is still the cornerstone of today's freeper fascists), and blacks allied themselves with Democrats, who they credited with those landmarks. So, historically, I guess you could say we're all "visitors". I started out as a liberal Republican (there was actually such a thing), but haven't voted for a republikan since '72. the Ray-gun years sealed it. Bush made it permanent. I will never vote for a republikan for any office at any level. Ever. Greens? Sure, locally, until they prove they're a party and not a one issue philosophy. Peace and Freedom? Maybe. But rethugs, nope. Ain't happening. I suspect after more disgusting racism such as that of Ms. Ferraro this morning, the black support for Democrats will be more unanimous, and more important, than ever.

Taking a Droogy
[Read the article: Who would the GOP rather face?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]On his break from Freak republik, droogy is sharing with us his wisdom. How fortunate we are. Each state, you moron, has a junior and a senior senator. Hillary is the junior senator from NY. I'd explain further, but I'm sure it's beyond your capacity. As for Obama and his "basement office", he was president of the harvard law review, while Rodham took three tries to pass the bar. I doubt you ever pass a bar, assuming you're old enough to get in. In the real world, where you'd need a passport, Hillary is so far behind in pledged delegates there is no even faintly plausible scenario in which she'd pass Obama. Speaking of passing, I feel a droogy coming on. Time to head to the loo with a good book and a fluffy roll of Charmin. love heywood

Really, Shawn!
[Read the article: Clinton campaign manager congratulates Obama on Mississippi win]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Have you taken a peek at Ms. ferraro's racial screed from this morning? Now that's race baiting. Is Obama guilty of being black in a white zone? What's happened the past week, with delegate adjustments from California and Texas, among others, and now with the Mississippi results, which should amount to around a four delegate net gain for Obama, will mean that all the hoo rah about Hillary's big "turnaround" In Ohio, Rhode Island (a botique, latte state, Shawn, or are those just the ones Obama wins?) and Texas has resulted in her being further behind than she was before those primaries took place. Further. Behind. She got fewer delegates in Texas than did Barack. Tell me again how that's a Hillary "victory"? Seems like you folks have sliding scale. Appropriate, because the nomination has basically already slipped away from a woman who had ever possible advantage going in. A year ago- hell, six months- she couldn't lose. but she found a way. That says something about leadership, about decision making under stress, about vision, and, yes, about instilling hope in those who support you. Obama has out thought her, out organized her, and has beaten her where it counts: in delegates. That is how we choose the nominee, sire. IF you want coronations, you're in the wrong party. Yes, we wrangle. Always have. Insert the Will Rogers quote here. I won't insult you; you know it. Don't insult us. Obama is not ahead because he's black. He is ahead because he has run a far, far better campaign. But, hey, if the Hillster wins 75 percent of the delegates from here on in, in every state, every time, then she can still make it. She has an equally likely chance of becoming the Queen of England. Just look at the numbers. You're a bright guy. You probably know probability theory better than I (but not nearly as well as our oldest daughter, who's wicked smart). The only state where Clinton has performed as well as she will need to from here on out was Arkansas. You think that home video in Pennsylvania will make those folks think she's from there, too? Maybe so. She's from New York now. That doesn't bother me. A guy named Kennedy did much the same thing. didn't have a helluva lot of experience. A little young. Kinda cocky, in a way. Very inspiring speaker. Sound familiar? Oughta.

Right on Shawn
[Read the article: Who cares if Eliot Spitzer hires prostitutes?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Yep, the whole notion of prostitution as a victimless crime is bankrupt. I did my senior thesis at Berkeley on victimless crime. If recreational drugs were legal, there might be instances of victimless behavior, but that begs the question, not only of the public health implications, but of the ripples that go through relationships, families, and communities when people abuse themselves, or one another. I'm no bluenose, but I have to say I was gobsmacked by that statistic of one in four teenaged girls having STD. On one level, it really does make me think of the sixties as the good old days. But that's superficial. Lives, reproductive futures, are at risk in appalling numbers. My quick look said that it's one if five white girls, one in two black girls. Do we need health care? Hell yes, for everyone, now. Is the mockery of "abstain and don't complain" teaching working? The stat speaks for itself. To be fair, though, our former president diid say that a blow job wasn't sex. As I dimly recall, it sure felt like it to me. tom
