  • Actual free Market Supporters? I'd LOVE to meet just one.

[Read the article: Free American broadband!]

I keep hearing from pro-business conservatives and corporations themselves that all government regulation is bad and if we just let the free markets work, everything would be wonderful.

Unfortunately, I don't think any of them believe it. Whenever a coporate monoploy is threatened, either from competition like Community Internet Networks, or their own stupidity (think of the airlines, the auto companies, etc.) come with open hands lookiing for Government handouts and or protections. It would be facinating to find a free marketter who actually walks the walk as well as talks the talk.

  • Never thought I would miss "Poppy"

Oh, for the days of the old republican party! I did not know how good we had it under Poppy Bush. The moderation! The recognition of reality!

Seriously, the Greek tragedy of this presidency has been stunning. Perhaps the president should go back and read the classics. He might learn something.

  • Duh!

[Read the article: Welcome to no-choice America]

Reading Heater's article made me heart sick. I have been involved in the pro-choice movement for over 20 years. We have been saying, over and over, Roe is under threat, but access is already so restricted for the poor and the young (two of our most vulnerable groups) that abortion may as well not be legal at all.

For years, pro-choice people like Heather have rolled their eyes and told us to not be so hysterical. No one would ever THINK of overturning Roe, and the restricts are not so bad (esp. not for me) so I really have nothing to worry about. Glad to know at least one of you (and you know who you are!) has woken up to reality.

I fear that it is going to take the overturning of Roe to get most people to move. It is really outrageous that we can be so casual about a basic right of women, we allow her ablity to access this right to depend on her zipcode. Is this America?

BTW, I have also been talking, since the 80's about the fact that the anti-choice movement is not going to stop with abortion. They are also gunning for birth control. Don't believe that either? Look at what the FDA is doing (or not doing) with Plan B. Look at pharmacists who are refusing (and being allowed to refuse)to fill birth control perscriptions. When the right to privacy is challenged, we must remember that that right was NOT established by Roe but by Griswold, which legalized BIRTH CONTROL for all women. To attack the right to privacy is to put our right to birth control also in danger.

I hope more people wake up.

  • Christmas is a Pagan Holiday!

[Read the article: How the secular humanist grinch didn't steal Christmas]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

When I became a pagan, I was most upset about not celebrating Christmas, easily my favorite holiday. After a bit of research, I realized that in fact Christmas is a cooption of the pagan celebrations of Winter Solstice. The Christmas tree - pagan, Candles in the window - pagan, Santa - pagan, Holly - pagan, the list goes on. Note that "Deck the Halls" has not even one Christian image. I also will point out that the celebration of Christmas was illegal in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (yes, my home and blue state heaven) until the 19th century because the Puritans considered it a - say it with me people - PAGAN HOLIDAY.

So, Christians, you need to relax. Happy Holidays referes to Christmas, Winter Solstice, Ramadam (often in Dec.), Chanukah, the Hindu Festival of Lights, Kwanza, and, of course, New Year's Eve and Day. If someone wishing me a Merry Christmas, or Happy Chanukah (my fincee is Jewish, so many people assume I am as well) I am NOT offened. I wish them a happy holidy (whichever one they wished me) and move on.

Now can we talk about how the parents of my generation (I am 40) have spoiled Halloween for their kids? Now, that feels like a consipircy to me!

  • Right on, Right on, Right on.

[Read the article: A man's right to choose, take four]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"stunning lack of humility" neither nor anyone else has put this issue to clearly. I actually got into an arguement with a man who said that pregnancy is something that happens to a woman. She just sits back and lets it all happen, and that is why she has no more right than the man when it comes to abortion or carrying to term. Stunning lack of humitity indeed.

  • Attention all breeders - Stop

[Read the article: Apple juice, straight up?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Well, don't stop breeding (unless of course you are sensitive to population and environmental concerns) just stop pushing your lovely little one in our faces. Yes, they are cute, yes they are the next generation, but when I go to a bar, one of the things I am seeking out is a childfree environment. If I were interested in kids 24/7, I'd have had some of my own.

The same is true of R rated moves. I once went to a late night (midnight) showing of Fantasia. When the Care Bears movie trailers produced heckles, a dad in the front turned around and yelled "Do you people mind, my kids are here?!" In fact, we did mind.

Come on people, there are child friendly and family appropriate places in this world, and there are other places that are not. What is next, bringing your kid to a strip club? How about an X rated movie? I know, bring them to the after hours Las Vegas show and scream at the show girls to cover up, there are kids in the audience!

  • Good Heavens, what have we come to.

    [Read the article: Fargo fiasco]

You know what, sometimes abortion isn't a tragedy. Sometimes it is the right thing to do. Sometimes, it is the best choice for all involved. And yes, sometimes it is a tragedy (a family can't afford another child, the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest) but sometimes it is the right thing a the right time. Soemtimes, it is even the moral choice. Can we stop judging people based on individual choices they made at particular times for very personal reasons? Can we finaly grow up?

I would have enjoyed this article A LOT more if it weren't quotes from peoples' books, but actual current thoughts. A bit old and stuff, not the best tribute to John.
