  • New Orleans

[Read the article: Red, white and mercenary in Iraq]

Didn't I read or hear somewhere that Blackwater is (or was) in charge of policing the more affluent parts of New Orleans? I do believe they are already "home".

After Bush vetoes the new legislation providing oversight of our mercenaries, I'm sure he'll find a way to convince congress to issue their own "Order 17", to apply here, in the name of national security, of course.

  • Still there?

  • Hold Bush's army accountable?

Better they should be abolished. Congress should do away with outsourcing governmental responsibilities, completely. Why do we have to pay extra, in the name of trimming the government's payroll? The private contractors cost many times more than government employees.

Wouldn't it be interesting to find out how much these companies paid in taxes, over the years that they're been making a (excuse the pun)killing, off our taxes?

  • It's up to us

[Read the article: "Soft on terrorism" or soft in the head?]

Okay, boys & girls, we've complained about the wingers supporting the war, but not joining the actual fighting. And yet we've put our efforts behind electing MORE OF THE SAME wimpy Democrats who sold us out to begin with - the same DINOs that followed Gephardt & Daschle over the cliff put those "leader"s" clones in power, with the last election. And don't forget, after the bombing to the Trade Center Bill Clinton asked for the same kinds of powers later given to Bush (but denied by a Republican congress). Of the current crop of would-be presidents, only Chris Dodd has made reinstating the Constitution a priority. The rest have either voted for further presidential power, or abstained from voting either way.

But, at any rate, it's time for all of us to put up or shut up - get our petitions out, get your signatures, get on the ballot, and RUN FOR OFFICE. To hell with supporting someone else (who'll only disappoint), time to put ourselves on the front line, and oppose the the forces of evil who continue to systematically betray US.

Go to your Secretary of State's website, and download the information, and startgetting those signatures.... I'm gonna

  • Socialism

[Read the article: The Republicans vs. the injured child]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

My Congressman, Steve Pearce, held a "virtual townhall" via telephone, the evening of the day Bush vetoed the SCHIPS expansion and held forth on the merits of denying health care to children, on principle, because it simply smacked of "socialism". Being the parrot that he is, Congressman Pearce, reiterated very talking point Bush used to justify the veto (and Pearce's adamant "nay" vote), including the supposed $80,000 threshold.

Unfortunately for him, he made the mistake of taking a call from someone who disagreed with him (in over 2 hours, only 2 such people were allowed to ask a question, I was not one). The lady related her daughter's situation, kids with pre-existing conditions that precluded insurance coverage, and the cost of medications & treatments, grandmother having to give up her job to take care of the grandkids, etc. By the time she finished her story, Pearce was speechless - but unwilling to concede that there might be MANY families in that situation.

Any program that deprives a large corporation of its rightful huge profits, in the name of benefiting people, is the slippery slope to (DREADED) SOCIALISM.

Excuse me, but health care, education & safe drinking water are on a par, right now - subject to what you can afford to pay for.

To these guys, "1984" was not a cautionary tale; it was a roadmap. and, boy is it effective...

  • The Constitution

[Read the article: They don't call them "unscientific" surveys for nothing]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Ron Paul did win that debate, based upon his answer to just the one question about going to war without Congress' approval. He was the ONLY one who thought refering to the Constitution was a good idea. Maybe lots of others felt the same way, and it wasn't just committed Paul supporters voting for him.

  • Get over it

I wish everybody would just leave the poor guy alone, about this. Propositioning someone of the same sex in a bathroom shouldn't be any more of a crime than propositioning someone of either sex, in a bar. He didn't offer money, nor did he try to force anything, as far as we've heard. He just put out "feelers", that could have been ignored.

Pick on him for his Senate votes, and his stances on public policy. Accept that he is a hypocrit (but show me a Republican who isn't, when it comes to sexuality) - but the piling on by the Republicans is also hypocritical. They've known about him for years; what they object to is his getting caught.

Can we turn our attention to the real obscenities going on in Washington - like the Democrats' enthusiasm for trashing the Constitution? They're starting to make the Republicans look like Thomas Jefferson, the way they are so willing to override our civil liberties in the name of keeping us "safe" - or at least not being accused of neglecting our "safety".

That number (date) should bring utter SHAME to Bush & Giuliani, both - How did it get to be their claim to FAME? How did such Failure become heroic? Boggles the mind.

Maybe returning the $9.11 indicates that Rudy is starting to develop a conscience about the many failures his mayoral administration was responsible for, and doesn't want to be reminded?

Nah - it's for all the reasons everyone else stated, here.

I have no idea where Craig was proposing an encounter; then & there,or elsewhere. As a Democrat (progressive, tolerant, etc.) I just can't agree with the vilification of a poor soul whose only real transgression was getting caught.

My opinion of Craig is he is a pretty much a sad useless character.

But, there really are MORE relavent atrocities taking place in this country, affecting more of us, than Craig's proclivity. That's all.
