also, tina...
[Read the article: Spanish conservatives: No more sexist symbols!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm very sorry to hear about the friend's cousin and the diabetic kids who died because their parents would not allow them medical treatment. That is child abuse, plain and simple.
But a headscarf will not hurt anyone. If the father beats his daughter for refusing to wear it, that is child abuse. If he nags her and yells "You're not going out dressed like that" when she tries to sneak out without it, that is not.
We have to let common sense prevail.

"If you eat crap, you are crap..."
[Read the article: Hey, skinny bitch!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Sorry. Just can't see how that's humorous instead of abusive.
I've never been on a "diet" (and never been more than about 15 lbs overweight--lost it by simply cutting out sugared soda and walking more), so I can't say what a good diet book is. Perhaps a vegan diet could be healthy, but it would take an enormous amount of consultation with a qualified nutritionist to make sure it had enough of certain nutrients in it, particularly calcium, protein, and iron.

they're against Valentine's Day in INDIA?
[Read the article: Love it or hate it, Valentine's Day is about women's rights]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I have a feeling this has more to do with trying to stem the (enormous) tide of Western commercialism than with something against tributes to romantic love.
Every single Bollywood picture I've heard of or seen (and a college roommate was VERY into them) is a big-budget, cheesy, old-fashioned musical love story. Even in the land of arranged marriages.

didn't "Juno" take in over $100 million in theaters...
[Read the article: Oscar and Hollywood in splitsville!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]...largely by word-of-mouth? And isn't it doing quite well in the "backwards" South and Midwest, despite the fact that you had to hunt for a theater that shows it? (Seriously. I live in New Orleans, which is not exactly the boondocks OR the place where a film like "Juno" wouldn't play well. As far as I know, it was shown on ONE SCREEN in all the theaters in the metro area.)
Didn't the same thing happen with "Little Miss Sunshine"?

get rid of the damn videos
[Read the article: Joan Blades on MomsRising]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]People read Salon at work. People have computers with slow connections. People are hard-of-hearing and have a hard time understanding a grainy-ass, jerky video without closed captioning.
I'm all three.
Seriously, were there complaints that there was "too much reading involved" in reading articles on Salon? What's with the damn videos?

Blatantly racist, when you consider...
[Read the article: Memo from U.S. Christian conservatives to Europeans: Have more babies!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]...that the area with the one of, if not THE highest, birth rates--sub-Saharan Africa--is also the area where Christianity is growing by leaps and bounds.
If this were truly about religion, on a global scale, we aren't exactly running out of Christians...
-
this always interested me about Christian conservatives in the U.S.
[Read the article: Memo from U.S. Christian conservatives to Europeans: Have more babies!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Some of them are welcoming Hispanics with open arms because they are already members of fairly conservative Christian churches (about 90% are Catholic, most of the rest belong to evangelical Protestant denominations) and they tend to believe in "traditional family values."
And some of them are worried about the Hispanics' high birthrate and America "turning brown."
-
again, about the videos...
[Read the article: More on Lindsay Lohan in "The Last Sitting"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]1. People read Salon at work.
2. People have slow internet connections.
3. People are deaf/hard-of-hearing and CAN'T UNDERSTAND A VIDEO WITHOUT CLOSED CAPTIONING.
I presume that you aren't just making this up as you go and that you wrote it out before getting in front of the WebCam. Really, would it be so hard to copy and paste what you wrote onto Broadsheet?
-
I, for one
[Read the article: Simone de Beauvoir celebrated for naked body, other stuff]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]would quite like to see Lindsay Lohan's take on French existentialism.

yes, some women read stupid chick lit...
[Read the article: This just in: Women are stupid!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]...but in general, as Dave Barry and numerous other male comedians have pointed out, we aren't as completely stupid when we're drunk.
Think of all the stupid ass things some women do when they get loaded--they drunk dial exes, they take their clothes off in public places, they sing bad karaoke, they hook up with people they shouldn't, they have crying jags, they start fights, they drive when they can barely walk, etc. Men are also known for doing all of these things while drunk.
But, a year or two ago, I read a newspaper article about a young British soldier who had to be treated for third-degree burns to his rectum. He survived a tour of duty in the most dangerous section of Afghanistan unscathed, only to come home, get loaded, and decide that in celebration it was a good idea to shoot bottle rockets out of his ass. Several other buddies of his decided it would be a good idea to film the fireworks.
You never hear about a woman, no matter how drunk she is, thinking it's a good idea to stick lit fireworks where the sun don't shine. And if she even suggested this, her girlfriends, no matter how drunk THEY were, would put a stop to it rather than film the spectacle.
