pageiger Do you think Belichick wishes he could reconsider his decison to forego the 48-yard FG attempt and go for it on 4th down in the 2nd quarter?
I don't know, but I would be. I didn't like that decision at the time, and I'm Mr. Go For It on Fourth Down.
David Buckley Kudos to the Jints for pulling off the most amazing upset in football history. Far, far bigger than the Jets' feat of days gone by. Bigger because of who they stopped.
I disagree. I think you're forgetting how powerful that Colts team was. They went 13-1. Their only loss was to Cleveland, a good team that the Colts stomped in the NFL Championship Game, 34-0. The Jets only had the third best record (11-3) in a league that was thought to be vastly inferior.
An odd thing about upsets is that their significance fades over time. At some point, it just becomes a part of history that the Jets beat the Colts, the '54 Giants beat the Indians, Tunney beat Dempsey. The shock of the moment fades as it becomes accepted fact and fewer and fewer people remember the actual event and how surprising it was.
Case in point, D Holt is already starting: You know, in retrospect, I don't think this will look like as big an upset as the media is making it this morning.
Back to David Buckley Have Romo and Brady inadvertently revealed a jinx that is worse than the cover of SI? Both paid the price for bringing their Trophy Girlfriends to The Game. Now, we're all left wondering: Did The Jinx Cost Them The Game?
That's why I never let the wife watch me write the column.
BeachBum Can someone who understands football please explain the extra time at the end of the game? ... Who is "they" and why did they "put time back on the clock?
"They" is the officials, who keep the time on the field. The scoreboard and TV clock are for reference, but aren't official. They put the time back on the clock because there was one second left when the previous play, an incomplete pass (and also a change of possession, which stops the clock), ended. Now, why they felt it necessary to actually play that one second, to clear the field, make the Giants snap the ball, etc., is that it's the NFL, and rules are everything in the NFL. Technicalities are everything.
-- --ce Maybe this game will remind sports media that there are TWO teams in any game, and it never hurts to stretch a little bit and take a real look at how BOTH teams might win a championship.
I don't understand this sentiment. It's a total straw man.
What sports media, including this column, didn't acknowledge that there were two teams in this game? The Patriots were prohibitive favorites. Legitimately so. Prohibitive favorites do sometimes lose. That's why they play the game etc. etc.
In this situation, if we pick the Giants, it's "Oh, you're just hoping to strut around on the off chance that the underdog wins."
If we pick the Patriots, it's "Geez, how unoriginal." And if they lose, "Duh, why can't you understand there are TWO teams in the game?" And "How about a mea culpa for being so arrogant!"
If we pick one or the other while making it clear that, yeah, we think the other team has a pretty good chance of winning, it's "Quit being so wishy-washy! Pick a team!"
Patrick Sheridan So what, no mea culpa's over your ill-written "10 reasons why the Patriots can't lose"? article?
See? Here's the headline of that piece: 10 reasons why the Patriots can't lose, and X why the Giants can win.
ramoncreager Manning MVP? Please. The Giants D-Line is the MVP, hands down. They don't play like that, they don't win. Period. You can't pick 4 players? Then pick one to honor them. Or pick Strahan. He was good too.
Amen.
droogoy "The quest for perfection turned out to be a hollow, meaningless pursuit." Couldn't have put it better.
Why? Why is the quest for something hollow and meaningless just because it fails?
J T One of those "road" victories was also at a neutral site in London against Miami. That's hardly a true home game for Miami.
A nit-picky point, but a good one.
L*F*A Is Eli Manning the worst quarterback ever... ...to win a championship? He is in my book.
He's not even in the conversation.
Red Leg Red Star's Ahoy! LOL... after what has seemed like months with no Editor's choice letters on King's "blog", the switch has been turned back on. Meaningless.
It hasn't seemed like months. It has been months. The red star on that first letter was placed there in error by an editor.
